Onboarding survey: Wording varies, with duplicative question on "My Account" page #60

UPDATED - 25-08-2026

The IATI Account "My Account" page contains a duplicate question about how the person wants to be called.

Currently:

  • Full name
  • How do you want to be called in person, for example at an IATI event?
  • How do you want to be called?
Image

Can we simplify this to two fields:

  • Full name
  • How do you want to be called?

It then makes sense to ensure these questions are worded the same way in the onboarding survey:

If there's a case for three different name fields, very happy to discuss. It currently looks inadvertently duplicative however, which seems the priority to address.

This is because there are actually three fields - there is the full name, a name for in-person interactions (e.g., name badges at events), and a name for online interactions. So the additional field is there because we're only asking for completion of the online name when we're onboarding, but we are making it available on the account page and it's visible for us to use in the CRM.

For info - I've started an (internal) doc to collaborate on the onboarding survey questions: IATI Account - new user onboarding survey (Jan 2026)

I think it'll be easier to discuss and agree on changes to questions there, where applicable, which we can then raise as specific GitHub issues.

I'll update this particular GitHub issue when we've agreed as a team how we want to use peoples' preferred language information going forward.

@chrisarridge mentioned today that this copy text change could be addressed as part of #109 as it relates to the onboarding survey.

I've updated the issue description above so that it's clear what the priority is. (I don't think we want to be overhauling the onboarding survey right now)

    @chrisarridge, @emmajclegg, @Mzsd:

Apologies to raise this question late in the day on this issue, but, while we're doing this editing, I was wondering if there is a reason that the question is phrased with a "How" rather than a "What"? The "How" question sounds a bit unnatural, like it's asking for the way you want to be contacted - "By phone, please" - or as requiring pairing with "would you like to be addressed?", whereas the "What" question fits a bit more naturally with asking for a noun. If this has been discussed previously and the decision intentionally made to go with the "How..." question, then do just ignore this question - but I thought I'd ask while this issue was being worked on.

Thanks for checking - this hasn't been discussed previously to my knowledge, and I'm definitely not wedded to any particular phrasing. The priority here was to remove the duplicative question.

On reflection, I agree that "how" sounds awkward.

Perhaps - "What do you prefer to be called?"

Whichever wording you agree on, I can adjust the label. Also should the onboarding survey label change too, or will that be part of #109?

I think the questions ready more naturally with a "What" instead of a "How", but it's whatever @emmajclegg thinks is best. I just wanted to raise the question while there was editing going on.

Ok, can we change the question to "What do you prefer to be called?", both in the onboarding survey and on the My Account page (for consistency).

    Thanks
