pnpm spell-check skips dot-directories (.github/, .vscode/, .claude/) #540

Description

@tkislan

Summary

The spell-check script runs cspell "**/*.{md,txt,json,js,ts,tsx,jsx,py,yml,yaml}". cspell's globs skip files and directories whose names start with . unless --dot is passed ("Include files and directories starting with .", per cspell --help), so the Spell Check job in CI never reads:

  • .github/workflows/cd-pypi-cli.yml, cd.yml, and ci.yml
  • .vscode/extensions.json and .vscode/settings.json
  • Markdown under .claude/ (Claude Code project skills), once any is added

Reproduction

On main, with cspell 9.2.2:

pnpm exec cspell "**/*.{md,txt,json,js,ts,tsx,jsx,py,yml,yaml}"
# CSpell: Files checked: 691, Issues found: 0 in 0 files.

pnpm exec cspell --dot "**/*.{md,txt,json,js,ts,tsx,jsx,py,yml,yaml}"
# CSpell: Files checked: 696, Issues found: 15 in 5 files.

All 15 hits are tool names, not typos: nvmrc (7 times), esbenp (3 times), manylinux, Retag, pypa, npmjs, and qltysh.

Expected

One of:

  • spell-check and spell-check:fix pass --dot, and cspell.json accepts those words (or ignores .vscode/**); or
  • dot-directories are declared out of scope in cspell.json ignorePaths, so the gap is deliberate and visible.
