Description

Font Project Git Repo URL:
https://github.com/cgowthamsai/brandswot-modular

Super short description of the Font Family:
A pixel display typeface built from running-bond brickwork. Every pixel of its 5 × 7 grid holds three courses of bricks, so the letters read as built, not drawn. Variable weight axis 300–900 (weight is expressed through the mortar joints, so letter shapes and spacing never change), Roman and Italic, GF Latin Core.

Requirements:

By opening this issue, I confirm the project meets the following requirements:

  • The entire font project is available in a Github repository (repo) and licensed under the OFL
  • I confirm that by 'entire font project', no "plus" or "pro" or other larger version of the project exists as a retail font anywhere
  • The source files are available in the repo (sources/BRANDSWOTModular.pixels → sources/build_ufos.py → UFO masters + designspace, built with gftools builder sources/config.yaml; CI builds on every push)
  • I am the sole copyright author of the entire project, or all other copyright authors have licensed their work to me under the OFL, and I commit to clearly disclosing if AI tools were used in the creation of this project.
AI disclosure: I designed the letterforms and the brickwork system. An AI coding assistant helped write the build script, extend the accented character set from my existing glyph designs, and prepare documentation.
  • There are no "Reserved Font Names" in the OFL license information, or in the project documentation of any known upstream projects. If there are RFNs, they are not used in whole or in part in this family name, or, I want to discuss how Google can work with my use of them.
  • The family name is unique according to namecheck.fontdata.com (see note below)
  • The name of the font family expected to appear on app menus must be very clearly communicated and definitive. It should not include any copyright holder's full names or acronyms. (see note below)
  • The font supports at least the Google Fonts 'Latin Core' glyphset from github.com/googlefonts/glyphsets
  • The repo has the Google Fonts preferred upstream repo structure
  • I have read, agree with, and comply with, the full Google Fonts contributing requirements (all except the family name, see note below)
  • I will maintain the repository and participate in the onboarding process

Note on the family name
The family name on app menus is BRANDSWOT Modular. "BRANDSWOT" is the name of my consultancy (BRANDSWOT Consultancy, India), and this typeface is the display voice of that brand, released openly. I know the requirements discourage a copyright holder's name or acronym in the family name and that FontBakery flags the all-caps word as an abbreviation. I'd like to ask whether an exception is possible for "BRANDSWOT Modular"; "Brandswot Modular" (mixed case) would also be acceptable to me. I'm happy to discuss.

FontBakery (Google Fonts profile): 0 FATAL. FAILs: family_name_compliance [abbreviation] (the name, see above) and family_and_style_max_length [instance-too-long] for the longest instance name. ERRORs were network checks that couldn't run on the build machine. Intentional WARNs: no kerning (pixel grid), decomposed caron outlines (ď ľ Ľ ť use a short vertical stroke), vendor ID BSWT not yet registered.

    Triage Summary

Thank you for your submission! Here is the initial triage analysis for BRANDSWOT Modular:

    • Google Fonts Project Template: The repository is not directly based on the standard googlefonts-project-template (it uses a custom Makefile, requirements.txt, and does not include the template standard repository layout section in README.md), but it has a compatible build configuration using gftools builder via sources/config.yaml.
    • Font Source Files: Yes, preferred font sources are present in sources/. It contains UFO masters (.ufo) for Light, Bold, Black, and italic styles, along with Designspace files (.designspace) and the original .pixels source with build_ufos.py.
    • Glyphset Coverage: Checked binary fonts (BRANDSWOTModular[wght].ttf, BRANDSWOTModular-Italic[wght].ttf, and static TTFs) using fontspector with the Google Fonts profile (googlefonts/glyph_coverage). All glyph coverage checks PASSED with complete coverage of the Google Fonts Latin Core (GF-latin-core) glyphset.
    • License & RFN: Licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (OFL.txt). No Reserved Font Names (RFN) are claimed.
    • Other Observations:
      • Family Name & Compliance: The family name currently contains the uppercase brand/consultancy name "BRANDSWOT", which conflicts with Google Fonts naming guidelines (avoiding company/foundry names, acronyms, or all-caps branding in family names) and triggers FontBakery failures (family_name_compliance [abbreviation] and family_and_style_max_length). As noted in your issue submission, discussion will be needed regarding naming adjustments (e.g., using mixed-case "Brandswot Modular" or another name).
      • Variable fonts (wght axis 300-900) are built and available for Roman and Italic styles.
