ThinLisp is shipped as a gzipped tarball and as a zip file.

1. Unpack the distribution into a directory of your choice. To unpack the

tarball on UNIX or Windows where Cygwin has been installed, use the following

commands.

cd <install-directory>

tar xzvf thinlisp-1.0.tgz

To unpack the zip file, use Winzip or some equivalent on Windows, or use the

following command.

cd <install-directory>

unzip thinlisp-1.0.tgz

2. Start your Lisp environment such that the default directory is the src

directory within the Thinlisp distribution, such that the following line would

work appropriately. (Note that tlt stands for ThinLisp Translator.)

(truename "tlt/")

=> "/home/jallard/work/tlt/"

3. Bootstrap the translator by loading its boot file.

(load "tlt/lisp/boot")

4. Compile the translator.

(compile-tlt)

5. A small test system has been included, called "lecho" for Lisp

Echo. It implements an executable that mimics the behavior of the

"echo" command in the SH, CSH, or BASH shells. You can compile, load

and translate Lecho, and its underlying TL system, with the following

form.

(tl:translate-system 'lecho)

6. The translator also emits makefiles. On a Linux system you could produce

the Lecho executable with the following commands from a shell. Look in the bin

directories for other makefiles for BSD, Cygnus, and Mac.

cd tl/bin

make -f makefile-linux

cd ../../lecho/bin

make -f makefile-linux

7. This should have produced an executable "lecho" in the lecho/bin

directory. You can make your own sytems by copying the boot file in

lecho/lisp into <your-sys>/lisp/boot.lisp, adding your own

functionality, and running similar commands.

Note that there are top level makefiles and boot.lisp files that

perform many of the tasks described here. Add lines for your own

subsystems to these in order to get a fully automated build of your

Lisp-based libraries and executables.

Enjoy.
