Document E2EE with local rclone alongside OpenCloud Web #1192

Open

Description

@tbsbdr

Background

  • OpenCloud Web encrypts client-side using the rclone crypt format.
  • The same encrypted folder can be accessed with a local rclone installation.

Target reader

  • Advanced End user or admin already familiar with rclone.
  • Wants encrypted data usable from a local machine and in the browser.

example use case

Encrypted offsite backup of a local folder, with browser access.

  • Freelance tax advisor, client files on a workstation.
  • OpenCloud hosted by a third party. Provider must hold ciphertext only.
  • Creates an encrypted folder in Web. rclone syncs the local folder nightly.
  • Reads single files in Web from any device using the passphrase.
  • New laptop: install rclone, enter the key material, folder restored.

Goal of the documentation

After reading the page, the user can:

  • Authenticate rclone against OpenCloud with an app token. OIDC is the only login method; the account password does not work with rclone.
  • Configure rclone so it reads and writes the same encrypted folder Web uses, based on a complete, copy-ready example.

not sure if this is user or admin docs.. maybe user docs?

@tbsbdr Should I document only rclone copy/sync, or should we also include rclone mount?

copy and sync transfer or synchronize files between a local directory and OpenCloud.

mount exposes the encrypted OpenCloud folder as a local filesystem, so users can work with it more like a local drive. Changes are written to OpenCloud through the mounted remote, but this is not the same as keeping a complete local copy synchronized.

Do we want to cover both use cases in this guide, or keep mount out of scope?
