Continuing the proposal from issue #5757. The original author, full discussion, research, and implementation references remain available in that issue. This discussion selects no implementation or merge.
Why this is a discussion
The original conformance allegation was not supported: the control has correct button semantics, and the downstream landmark issue involved different markup. The closed #5530 study later reported good performance for nearly all participants. The remaining appearance question needs new evidence before more banner changes are selected.
Question to resolve
Preserve the visual-affordance proposal in Discussion, including the limited-space constraint, correct-semantics investigation, and positive later research. Keep the distinct announcement defect #5926 in its own tracker.
Compatibility constraints
Do not restyle a widely deployed banner on an unsupported semantics premise. A future change needs a demonstrated comprehension benefit, current AT evidence, and compatibility review.
A bounded implementation issue can be opened when a concrete user benefit, acceptance criteria, and compatible approach are established.
