[Feature] Deploy using policy #2365

Open

Description

@Obegg

For those who are not familiar with polices, I will explain.

Polices are mainly used in enterprises where an organization is the one who manages the browser within the organization in every PC instead of the user, it could be extensions installed and it could be any other settings within the browser.

Example of policy which installs Violentmonkey (Google Chrome) for the user:
Google Chrome: ExtensionInstallForcelist
Create a registry key in HKLM:\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\ExtensionInstallForcelist
Add String Value named 1 with value of jinjaccalgkegednnccohejagnlnfdag
That's it, now Violentmonkey will be installed for the user once he opens Google Chrome.

There are many other polices, one of which could manage the settings of the installed extensions, meaning an organization could manage the settings of a specific extension without manually and painstakingly do so on each and every computer, a good example of how to do so on uBlock Origin can be found here.

Now you know what policy is, why it's used and how to use it.

The reason I explained all of this is because I would like to deploy adsbypasser using policy,
so far I managed to deploy Violentmonkey using polices, but I would like to know how I can deploy adsbypasser using polices aswell.

Wait, what? I think you misunderstood me or I did not properly explain my feature request.
What I request here is basically, very simply - a way to backup and restore installed scripts for violentmonkey using registry, same way as uBlock Origin does that to restore settings (I have already provided the link to how to do it in OP).

I meant deploy it with installed scripts.
It has nothing to do with the forum link you provided.
Adsbypasser is a script inside violentmonkey.
I just want to deploy violentmonkey with adsbypasser installed so I won't have to manually install adsbypasser via violentmonkey repeatably.

I understand now, thanks. So it sounds like #2226?

    Thank you.

    Uhm, possibly, especially this part:

My goal is to have those scripts pre-installed and ready to use without requiring additional user action after the extension is loaded.

But I found some problems with his issue:

    1. He did not provide (or wasn't aware) of ways to do it such as policies (using registry), that uBlock Origin uses for example.
    2. No such option is currently available in violentmonkey (which is why I created this issue specifically, to make it a new feature).
    3. He uses Puppeteer, I don't, I would like to use policies.

Just a small (big) update - apparently tampermonkey added this feature.

Can violentmonkey add this feature too, please?

@tophf What js file does the functionality to install scripts from a URL? I am looking into this issue and trying to implement it.

Not sure if this would be helpful but here's an AI response to that question (if this is a mistake let me know and I'll mark it as off-topic):

Based on the project's source code, the functionality to install scripts from a URL is handled in the src/options/views/tab-installed.vue file.

This Vue component implements the main script management dashboard, which includes the "Install from URL" feature. The specific function responsible for triggering this action is handleInstallFromURL().

@eveeifyeve, it's request() to get the code and parseScript() afterwards.

Is there functions to take that in and add it to storage of the extension? Because I will need a way to disable updating for a script and be able to store something that says it's managed by enterprise policy.

parseScript saves the script automatically so if you'll need to pass that data as a parameter and then set it on the script object before it is written.

Is anyone working on this? I'd like to take a stab at it if not.
