Special Collection in Honor of Shu Gao's Contributions to Marine Sediment Dynamics and Related Studies

Participating journal: Geo-Marine Letters
Professor Shu Gao obtained his Bachelor's degree in Geomorphology and Quaternary Geology, as well as his Master's degree in Marine Sedimentology and Geomorphology, from Nanjing University, China, in 1982 and 1985, respectively. He began his research career at the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration of China. In 1993, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Marine Sediment Dynamics from University of Southampton, UK, and subsequently held the position of Research Fellow at the same university until 1996. Upon his return to China, Shu Gao initially served as a Research Professor at the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1996-2000), and then accepted a professorship at Nanjing University, where he has long led the Key Laboratory of Coastal and Island Development, Ministry of Education. From 2016 to 2020, he held the position of Director at the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. Since then, he has continued his professorship at Nanjing University. Over the course of his more than 40-year research career, he has made significant contributions to various areas of marine sediment dynamics, earning a distinguished international reputation. His research spans modern sedimentary processes, the evolution of Holocene sedimentary systems, mechanisms of sedimentary record formation, land-sea interactions, and the impacts of human activities. Environments of interest include tidal flats, salt marshes, beaches, tidal inlets, estuaries, deltas, continental shelves, and atolls, etc. He has published 461 papers in internationally refereed journals, authored and edited 10 books, and contributed 50 articles as book chapters. He has served as the editor-in-chief of Marine Geology since 2017. Prof. Shu Gao has supervised 67 PhD and MSc students and collaborated with 16 postdoctoral researchers. Most of these individuals have continued to engage in related scientific research at universities, institutes, and organizations in countries throughout the world. We are launching a special collection in Geo-Marine Letters to honor Professor Shu Gao's contributions to the field of marine sediment dynamics. This collection reflects the diverse impacts he has made in this discipline and his dedication to promoting both international and domestic collaboration.
