The immune system plays a central role in maintaining tissue homeostasis and protecting against disease. From autoimmune disorders to cancer, from neuroimmune interactions to metabolic regulation, the immune cell heterogeneity and functional plasticity are now recognized as the engines driving both protection and pathology.
This collection will spotlight immune cell heterogeneity and functional plasticity across health and disease, positioning them as the conceptual anchors for future research. By moving beyond single disease or single-cell perspectives, we aim to illuminate shared principles that govern diverse immune populations, T cells, macrophages, NK cells, dendritic cells, innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), and beyond.
A central focus of this collection will be on forward-looking perspectives, emphasizing emerging concepts, novel technologies (such as single-cell and spatial omics), and future research directions. We particularly encourage contributions that provide new conceptual frameworks, challenge existing paradigms, and introduce innovative approaches to studying immune regulation and dysfunction.
Topics of interest include:
• Immune cell heterogeneity and plasticity across health and disease
• Mechanisms of immune tolerance and dysfunction in autoimmunity and cancer
• Neuroimmune interactions and immune diversity in neurological disorders
• Metabolic and environmental regulation of immune heterogeneity
• Tissue specific immunity and microenvironmental influences
• Cutting-edge technologies: single-cell, spatial omics, multi-omics, and AI
• Biomarkers and translational applications of immune heterogeneity
