Smart Mobility and Transformative Technologies for Sustainable Urban Futures

This special issue invites research contributions on the role of digital innovations and the convergence of technology, infrastructure and socio-technical considerations in promoting sustainable and efficient urban transport for resilient cities.

Papers considered for the special issue would critically examine how digital innovations are reshaping the mobility landscape and influencing societal and behavioural changes. We welcome contributions that frame smart mobility as a socio-technical ecosystem, where technologies converge with people, governance, urban design, behavioural science, and net-zero sustainability policies that support United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The special issue is open to interdisciplinary research across engineering, data science, policy, and urban planning, and welcomes articles that are focused on timely, real-world challenges and transformative innovations.

Aims and Scope:

This special issue explores how transport electrification, automation, mobile and cloud computing, sharing economy solutions enabled by digital platforms, decentralised peer-to-peer exchange of personal mobility assets and services, and AI can lead to sustainable transformations in urban mobility.

Specifically, papers are invited that demonstrate how these innovations contribute to the decarbonisation of transport, enhance infrastructure resilience, promote people-centred transport solutions, and enable a shift away from personal mobility ownership to access.

This special issue encourages submissions that present novel frameworks, real-world implementations, integrative planning strategies, digital twin and simulation evaluations, and data-driven approaches for smart mobility, especially those that bridge theory and practice and offer policy-relevant insights.

Topics of Interest (include but are not limited to):

• Urban digital twins and simulation-based decision support systems

• Internet of Things (IoT) and data integration in transport systems

• AI-enabled solutions for smart and sustainable urban transport

• Connected and autonomous transport including cooperative transport solutions

• Behavioural interventions and their role in promoting sustainable travel changes

• Digital innovations in shared and peer-to-peer collaborative mobility

• Resilient infrastructure and adaptive transport networks

• Urban logistics and sustainable supply chain management

• Governance models and policy frameworks for smart mobility

Alignment with UN SDGs:

This collection supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. The special issue welcomes research articles that contribute directly to these global targets.
