The Next Decade of Electrostatic Precipitation and Plasma Technologies in the Net-Zero Transition

Participating journal: Aerosol and Air Quality Research

This Collection is dedicated to advancing both fundamental research and practical applications in electrostatic precipitation (ESP) and plasma technologies. Our primary objective is to catalyze the development of next-generation systems, ensuring that ESP and plasma actively assist, adapt, and drive progress along the global journey toward net-zero emissions.

Although this Topical Collection is organized in collaboration with the 18th International Conference on Electrostatic Precipitation (ICESP 2026; https://conference.gigvvy.com/icesp2026), to be held in Taipei, Taiwan, from November 2 to 5, 2026, submissions from the wider international research community are also welcome. To encourage high-quality contributions, the organizers will offer three 50% APC discounts for invited contributions. In addition, five 20% APC discounts will be offered to the first five accepted manuscripts submitted by ICESP participants. Authors wishing to be considered for this discount should clearly indicate in the cover letter that the manuscript is based on work presented at ICESP 2026. Springer Nature’s standard eligibility-based APC waivers and discounts will also remain available for other qualifying submissions.

We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and practical case studies that explore the expanded applications and boundaries of ESP and plasma technologies. We are particularly interested in research that highlights their strategic integration into emerging industrial sectors to meet the urgent demands of the net-zero pathway.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• ESP as a Guardian and Plasma as a Converter: Their strategic roles in protecting and enhancing Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) systems.

• Advanced WESP Innovations: The development and optimization of highly efficient wet electrostatic precipitators (WESP) for demanding environments.

• Plasma-Assisted Technologies: Novel approaches combining plasma with traditional systems for enhanced chemical conversion and emission control.

• Ultrafine Particle Capture: Advanced mechanisms and system designs for the superior capture of ultrafine particulate matter.

• System-Wide Energy Optimization: Strategies to improve the energy efficiency, operational footprint, and renewable integration of ESP and plasma systems.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – This Collection supports cleaner air, reduced emissions, and sustainable urban environments through advances in electrostatic precipitation and plasma technologies.
