Carter Page joined Inside the CTO Circle to talk about how we actually build with agents at Astronomer. The short version: every team runs its own agents. They work overnight, and engineers review the output in the morning. When an incident fires, the context is already there by the time a human sits down. What makes that safe enough to run every day: 🔁 Airflow is the outer loop: scheduling, retries, event triggers, all the logs in one place 🤖 Agents are the inner loop and keep iterating until the result holds up 👤 Agents never push to production. Whoever ships the code owns it, no matter who wrote it Agents can take the night shift. Orchestration and ownership are why we trust them with it. Thanks for having Carter on. Worth the full listen 👇
MTTR got "much, much faster" once agents were bringing in context about an incident by the time a human sits down at a keyboard. The reason: by the time a human responds to an incident, agents have already pulled the context, started root cause analysis, and suggested which SMEs to pull in. That's Carter Page, EVP of R&D. On this episode of Inside the CTO Circle, Shruti Bhat and I talk with Carter Page, EVP of R&D at Astronomer about his team's experience with AI-native engineering. What struck me was the velocity they're moving at. As Carter said, "Everything's gotta be so fast or you're just out of the conversation." - Agents now take the night shift; in the morning the engineers review the work. - With review as a potential bottleneck, each PR gets reviewed several times by agents before a human looks at it. - AI tools did not turn every junior engineer into a senior engineer. It can actually widen the productivity gap: "If I have a bad coder, they're generating bad code at lightning speed." - PMs have moved from writing PRDs to building working prototypes. - 90% of sales now access company data each week - up from 3%. The key is Kepler, the agent built by the data team. - Why token dashboards should coach teams, not become a scoreboard. - Advice for new grads: solve problems by hand first. "The output of the AI is only as good as the driver in the car."
