Google scaled the monorepo. Meta did too. Anthropic just pushed it further for AI - but is the next answer really a bigger repo? That’s the traditional answer: when code scales, build a bigger repo. But AI changes the bottleneck. Code is becoming abundant. Writing it is easy. Verification, ownership, and coordination are the new hard parts. A repo tells you what code changed. A graph tells humans and agents what that change means - who owns it, what it affects, and what needs to be verified. So anyone can make a change without understanding the entire system first - and without being afraid of what they might break. That’s why the next abstraction isn’t a bigger repo. It’s product units connected on a graph. Scaling the repo eventually becomes a dead end when AI writes the code. AI can help a 10-person company produce the kind of software complexity that once belonged mostly to enterprises. That may be less of an advantage than it sounds. Bit Cloud founder Ran Mizrahi put it sharply when we spoke with him: “AI just gave everyone else the enterprise’s problem.” More code means more dependencies to understand, more changes to verify, and more software someone eventually has to review. Simply generating faster does not remove that work. Bit’s answer goes in a different direction: before AI writes something new, give it a way to see what the company already has and reuse the pieces that already work. That turns the AI coding conversation on its head. As generating code gets easier, the more valuable capability may be knowing what does not need to be generated at all. A ten-person company can now generate in a year the amount of code that once made managing these connections mainly an enterprise concern. Our founder Ran Mizrahi spoke with SaaSTake about what happens next: "AI just gave everyone else the enterprise's problem." The instinct is to scale review to match generation. But you cannot hire reviewers as fast as a model writes, and Google's DORA research shows the time saved generating code tends to reappear as auditing and verification work. The alternative is to change what reaches review in the first place: → Compose applications from verified components the organization already owns → Keep net-new code in a release small enough for a person to actually read → Map what a change affects before it ships, not after Code is becoming easier to produce.
