In 1965, she became the first programmer hired for the Apollo project at MIT, and the first woman in that role. By 1968, she was leading the team writing the software that would fly astronauts to the Moon. She pushed for software engineering to be taken seriously as a discipline when others treated it as a joke. She went on to write software for Skylab, found two software companies, and pioneer ideas that are still central to how reliable software is built today. Thank you, Margaret, for all you contributed to computer science, and for the inspiration you have been, and will always be, to millions of students.

This is what the Hour of AI is all about. Start Building!

My first 5K took me 30 minutes. I had no idea that was slow, so I went back out. That 30 minutes ended up being an important number for me. It gave me something to beat. I cut more than 10 minutes off it and went on to captain my high school and college teams. Your first try at something is a baseline. Thats the idea behind this years Hour of AI: Start Building. In December, during CSEdWeek, students will spend one hour building with AI. If its their first time, what they make will be a first draft. It'll be the # they get to beat the next time. Every student is going to use this technology for the rest of their life. Few will understand it well enough to question it, or to build something better. Send this to one teacher you know. Their first hour will be a rough draft too. December 7 to 13. Link in the comments. #HourOfAI #StartBuilding

Kids are growing up with AI. Most have never been shown how it works. The Hour of AI gives every classroom a place to start building. The Hour of AI is a free, global event that invites students to explore AI through teacher-led, hands-on activities, with classrooms, schools, and even entire districts participating during CSEdWeek in December. This year, the Hour of AI will help students start building digital fluency, the ability to understand, direct, question, and create with the technology shaping their world. Teachers, you don't need an AI background to try this. The classroom toolkit is live now, with ready-to-use resources to support the lessons already in progress for CSEdWeek. Start building (and planning) now — download the toolkit today: https://bit.ly/3U6KTde #HourOfAI

Students already meet AI in their search results, social feeds, and messaging apps, whether or not they ever open a chatbot. Parents know this, and new national polling from the National Parents Union shows what they want schools to do about it. 85% of parents want schools to teach AI safety. 85% say training on technology, the internet, and AI would help students succeed after high school. Parents want their kids protected and prepared. Preparation starts with digital fluency: the ability to understand, direct, question, and create with the technology shaping their lives. https://parentsonai.org/

Tinya rated her own AI and CS confidence a 1 or 2 not long ago. Now she puts herself around an 8: "There are many times when I need support, but I don't have to overthink or create anything on my own." If you're heading into this year feeling behind, you're not. That's what our support is here for. Start where you are. Learn more at the link below!
