Critics Consensus

As thought-provoking as it is visually compelling, The Witch delivers a deeply unsettling exercise in slow-building horror that suggests great things for debuting writer-director Robert Eggers.

Like any good horror film, The Witch is rife with opportunity for allegorical interpretation, and one of the most compelling narratives bubbling beneath surface is the origin story of America itself. Go to Full Review

The stakes are real. The Devil is real. All roads do not lead up the mountain. Some lead to the heart of darkness, to the depths of a witch-haunted wood. Go to Full Review

The film starts with wordy wittering and ends by trying to woo our shrieks -- from Arthur Miller to Dennis Wheatley in the shortest time possible between two blunt points. Go to Full Review

Sergio Oct 20, 2025 Brilliant film. Must watch on the big screen. See more Alex B @AlexBioni 5 hrs ago Clickity clackity I've watched this about a dozen times, and my conclusion hasn't changed: it's just okay and overrated. I love Robert Eggers, but this might be my least favorite of his films. The authenticity is great, from the old English dialogue to the lived-in farm. The acting is exceptional. I like the family paranoia and the struggles of living in the middle of nowhere on sick land. The woods scenes are creepy, and the wrinkled witch is subtle and effective. The baby sequence and barn scene are highlights. But the story feels thin. A family is exiled, suspects a witch, and spends the movie blaming each other. "You're a witch! No, you're a witch!" There are themes to unpack, but it's slow, not very scary, and not much happens. The old English adds authenticity but can make the plot hard to follow. I feel like I'm the only person who thinks this is just okay. The last 20 minutes are great, but that's about it. See more Chris J @franknitty 8 hrs ago It kept me engaged but ended a little weaker than expected. See more Hannah R @AngryUser 1 day ago I'm a fan of horror, but the words "slow burn" usually keep me at bay. This movie, however, was an absolute joy to watch. I enjoyed every second of this brick by brick layering of suspense. The performance of the cast and the wonderful cinematography also helped to make this movie a truly rare treat. See more Garry W @RT22792929 3 days ago Spoiler at the end. I thought this was a well done film and had many strengths. But funny enough considering its what people say it lacks (and it might say something about me) , personally I thought the problem with the film was that leaned to much into the supernatural whilst not sticking to the psychological horror that is at the heart of the movie. Its like its trying to be Arthur Millers the Tempest whilst also trying to be the Evil Dead. The horror is that the family fails because of a lack of trust in one another - but the vehicle for that is actual real life witches and the devil. It feels like it might have been better to keep the ending more ambiguous than have the actual devil run amok for the last twenty minutes. It felt like a bit of a cop out to be honest. For one thing the lack of food and ergot poisoning might have featured as an explanation instead. There are documented cases of entire families experiencing hallucinations because of ergot poisoning in New England then. See more Sun R @SUNruth 4 days ago I think this movie is an excellent show of what you can do with just a couple characters and one scary creature. The movie was vary captivating throughout its runtime and the foreshadowing was amazing. My only issue was that in my opinion there wasn’t enough of the woods which I found to be the scariest part of the movie, however that’s just my opinion which means to others it would be a 5/5 See more Read all reviews
