Adapted from Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel, this seductive, psychological thriller follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity. After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity's chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity's husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.

Critics Consensus

Possessing all the ingredients for a guilty pleasure, Verity leans more towards guilty than pleasurable due to plot twists that are more deflating than intriguing.

A twisty adaptation that keeps Colleen Hoover’s fans hooked, Verity is a nail-biting, sexy thriller elevated by Anne Hathaway.

One wishes Showalter and his cast would have leaned harder toward the twisty hysteria of something like A Simple Favor (2018) instead of trying to imagine what a Hitchcock movie would be like with less tension and more Chobani product placement.

Verity lopes around unevenly instead of building to a fever pitch.

There is an intensely stupid twist near the end that makes no narrative sense and is followed by a final reel rug-pull so inconceivably lazy that it inevitably symbolises two fingers casually raised in the direction of the audience.

The sad irony is that Verity is more likely to leave the viewer catatonic than to titillate.

A thriller packed with impossible twists and over-the-top performances. A clumsy, grotesque, and appealing circus that entertains like few others during its central block.

As a book reader, I had such higher and different expectations. Had I not read the book first, Id say it was a pretty good movie.
