Whether it’s making a mad dash for a morning coffee before the first bell, grabbing post-practice takeout with teammates, or catching a ride home from the mall, teens across the US and Canada are officially back in the rhythm of the school year.

To mark the start of a new school year, Uber took a look at how teens with Uber teen accounts are riding and dining as they settle back into their routines. From pumpkin spice cravings to mall runs and Friday night plans, the 2026 Teen Trends Index reveals how the next generation is getting where they need to go, ordering what they’re craving, and making the most of the season.

Uber teen accounts (ages 13-17) are designed to give teens more independence while helping parents and guardians stay connected, with built-in safety features and visibility into their teen’s trips and orders. Whether they’re getting a ride to practice or ordering dinner after a long day, teen accounts give families another way to navigate busy schedules.

So, what does back-to-school look like for teens in 2026? Here’s a look at the standout trends, viral order habits and city personalities defining the season.

After the Bell: Malls, Meetups & Packed Schedules

  • The Mall is Making a Comeback: Teen trips to malls are up 50% when compared to the daily average in April 2026, peaking after school and on Saturday afternoons during back-to-school season—and they’re not just popping in.
    • The typical teen mall hang lasts about two hours, with one in three staying three hours or more and weekend visits stretching even longer.
    • The most popular malls? Miami’s Aventura Mall and CocoWalk, closely followed by New Jersey’s American Dream
  • Busy Parents, Busy Teens: Nearly half of all teen account trips happen during standard working hours, helping teens get where they need to go while parents are on the clock during the week.
  • Coffee Run Ritual: Coffee runs are practically a back-to-school ritual for teens, with teen account trips from coffee shops up nearly 45% during the first four weeks of the back-to-school season compared to a four-week period over the summer. And teens are more likely to get picked up from a coffee shop than dropped off there—a clear “grab a drink, then go” pattern.
  • Friday Nights Light > Headliners: Concerts from artists like Zach Bryan, Phoebe Bridgers, and Kesha drove major teen account trip spikes, but the biggest recurring teen travel moment is Friday night itself. Once school is back in session, teen Friday evening trips climb to nearly 2x a normal weeknight, with what seems to be Friday night football emerging as one of the key drivers—rides around high schools spike around kickoff time and climb even more after the clock runs out.
  • From Last Bell to First Rep: Beyond school and home commutes, extracurricular venues account for a noticeable share of teen rides, with these activity destinations topping the list:
    • 1. Gym
    • 2. Court/rink/pool
    • 3. Practice field
    • 4. Dance Studio
    • 5. Martial arts

The Back-to-School Menu

  • The Pumpkin Spice Surge: Teen orders with a pumpkin item spiked from a handful a day to up to more than 300 in a single day as key seasonal menus dropped the week of August 19-26, and the pumpkin orders stayed elevated through September.
  • The Nugget Generation: Burgers lead teen food orders overall, but nuggets reveal one of the biggest generational differences: teens order chicken nuggets roughly twice as often as adults. Fries round out the top three teen favorites.
  • The Snack Formula = Heat + Ice: Teens want their snacks hot and their drinks ice cold: 7-Eleven, Inc. led the pack for convenience orders, with Takis Fuego and Doritos Dinamita among the spicy favorites—and Slurpees and Big Gulps to wash them down.
  • Dinner—and Saturday—Take the Crown: After-school snacks (3–6 PM) may make up nearly a quarter of teen food orders, but dinner (6–9 PM) is the #1 ordering window. And when it comes to days of the week, Saturday dominates, accounting for almost 1 of every 5 teen orders.

Orders Worth Talking About

  • Favorites on Repeat: Can’t say they aren’t committed.
    • One teen placed 60 drink orders from the same coffee shop in 46 days—averaging more than one order a day for over six weeks straight.
    • One ultra-loyal teen ordered Uber Eats every single day for 163 straight days—over 5 months without a single skipped day.
    • Another fan kept a 24-day burrito bowl streak going strong.
  • Back-to-School Comes in Neon Pink: More than 500 teens had hair dye delivered, with shades ranging from red and pink to green and purple in the mix.
  • Party-Sized Cravings: Massive bulk orders included 50 pieces of naan from a local restaurant and a 40-piece salmon sushi delivery in Toronto.
  • Creepy Crawlies: 118 live crickets were in a single delivery —with one teen alone having 474 live crickets and 50 live roaches delivered across 3 weeks.
  • The Dog Gets a Birthday Order, Too: Three teens had birthday goodies delivered for their dogs, from birthday-cake-flavored treats to party gift bags.
