I typically respond within 24 hours (unless I am traveling or lack internet access, in which case my response may take longer). I am grateful to everyone for pointing out my errors. The only people who do not make mistakes are those who do nothing at all; anyone who takes action is bound to make mistakes. My goal is to learn from these errors and strive not to repeat them. Wikidata and Wikipedia exist thanks to people who take action and are not afraid to make mistakes. In an ideal world—one where no editors ever make errors—the bureaucrats of Wikidata would become obsolete, as they would no longer have anything left to do! :-)

Ad “Removing disallowed qualifier from sex or gender (P21) per constraint”

[edit]

Hi! OK, I understand the constraint. The problem is 1) I don’t know of any (standard) way to represent the removed data, 2) the data is now irretrievably lost. There are various ways in use which try to represent gelding (Q506461), most of them “wrong” in this regard: E.g. instead of sex or gender (P21)male organism (Q44148)instance of (P31)gelding (Q506461), they just use sex or gender (P21)male organism (Q44148)has characteristic (P1552)gelding (Q506461) (e.g. Q130529326)… Others use even has characteristic (P1552) or nature of statement (P5102) (!). Yet another way is sex or gender (P21)gelding (Q506461) directly (e.g. Q123473699), which seems quite fine as a matter of data modelling, but it also triggers a constraint. The only way not triggering a constraint is a direct straight-on-the-nose instance of (P31)gelding (Q506461) which… seems not that great, but… OK, it does not trigger any constraint. Anyway, I’d expect that any such automated cleanup actions would try to preserve the information: that is, first decide what the correct way to model the information is, and then just fix the modeling, moving the information, not deleting it. Mormegil (talk) 09:06, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the detailed explanation — you're right that the bot should
never delete information, only move it. I've stopped the constraints bot. I
will undo all P21 qualifier removals (17 items affected) to restore the lost
data. Before re-enabling, the bot will be reworked to either skip these cases
or properly relocate the qualifier data. I apologize for the data loss. ~~~~ Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 18:36, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

MusicBrainz artist IDs

[edit]

Hi, could you check your MusicBrainz artist ID import; I checked a few and those were linked to the wrong person, but with the same given/family name, for example this one. Difool (talk) 10:00, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I checked and reverted 3 edits yesterday, but you readded the MusicBrainz artist IDs, for example here, so please stop this import and first check the IDs you have added and revert errors before you continue - Difool (talk) 04:38, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for catching this — you're absolutely right. I've stopped the
MusicBrainz import immediately. The matching was name-only (score ≥95) which
is clearly insufficient for disambiguation. I will: (1) audit and revert all
incorrect P434 additions, (2) the bot won't re-add reverted IDs anymore.
Before re-enabling, I'll add cross-validation against birth date, country, and
occupation. Sorry for the re-additions after your reverts — that shouldn't
  have happened. ~~~~ Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 18:34, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Update: All 136 MusicBrainz (P434) and ORCID (P496) identifiers added by the bot have been removed — data fully restored to its original state. The identifier import task has been permanently deactivated. Thank you again for catching this. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 22:36, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

They seem to be added again, for example here - Difool (talk) 11:38, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I sincerely apologize — this should not have happened. The identifier bot ran again on April 16 due to a stale scheduled job that was not properly removed. I have now:
  1. Reverted all 15 P434 additions from April 16
  2. Renamed the bot script so it cannot be executed at all
  3. Verified no other scheduled mechanism can trigger it
The identifier import is permanently dead. Thank you for your patience in reporting this repeatedly. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 15:26, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

male/female

[edit]

Hi, can I ask you to avoid the "slash" (/) in labels, at least for the Romanian language? The male and female forms of label should be present in the respective properties, not in the label and certainly not both in a single label. Example of what I mean. Gikü (talk) 12:59, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I will run some Help:QuickStatements edits once you're finished with the Romanian language professions (already ran for about 40-50 items), but please consider the same problem in other languages. Gikü (talk) 13:18, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Solved for ro. I'm seeing virtually all your sk labels have the slash, please correct them, and other languages as needed. Gikü (talk) 13:42, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Gikü, thank you for the feedback and for fixing those 40–50 Romanian items yourself. You are absolutely right — the slash in labels is not the correct approach. The source data was ESCO v1.2.1, where some languages use the "male/female" format in a single field. I should have split them before import. For sk and other languages with the slash pattern, I will fix them: keep the male form as the main label and move the female form to aliases. I will go through all affected languages. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 17:10, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi, if you haven't started yet I've prepared QuickStatements for all affected languages and I'm running it. Gikü (talk) 17:43, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done. Some items proved to be the wrong ones to add the respective labels to, so I undid the changes: User:Gikü/todo/trades. Have a great day/night, and my advice is to not stretch yourself on multiple tasks at once. Gikü (talk) 21:20, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate statements

[edit]

I have noticed on Msambweni (Q1951532) that you are adding the same population figure over and over and over. Please check your scripts. Also be aware that stated in (P248) should be added as a reference and not as a qualifier. Gikü (talk) 13:23, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for catching this. I will check the script on Msambweni (Q1951532) and fix the duplicates. Noted on stated in (P248) — stated in as a reference, not a qualifier. I will correct all affected items. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 17:10, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please stop adding ecuador population data

[edit]

What you're adding is wrong. QQuinindé (talk) 19:21, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Probably also a lot of data for other countries, but I can't check that all. QQuinindé (talk) 19:26, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for stopping this immediately. You're right — my population bot was falling back to English Wikipedia infobox scraping for countries outside its primary list (which covers KZ/UZ/AZ/TR/MX only). That is not an authoritative source for Ecuadorian population — INEC is. I should not have let the bot touch EC items.  Actions taken:
  1. Bot stopped, all cron jobs disabled (19:30 UTC today).
  2. Will not resume for any country until the pipeline is hardened to use only verified government statistical sources per jurisdiction.
I'd like to revert all Ecuador P1082 additions I made today. Would you prefer:
  (a) I run the revert myself (list of ~20 Q-IDs from my contributions log), or
  (b) you revert what you've seen + let me know any others you spot, or
  (c) some other approach.
If you're willing, could you also point me to which INEC/Redatam dataset is the community consensus for population on Ecuadorian parroquias / cantones? That would prevent this from happening when I return to EC items with proper sourcing.                                          Apologies for the disruption. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 19:51, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Quick update: I've now reverted all 103 population statements I added today, and disabled the Wikipedia-infobox fallback code path in the bot entirely — only hardcoded government census data (INEC, Rosstat, TurkStat, INEGI, INE, etc.) will be used going forward. For the Ecuador cases specifically, I'm re-checking each against INEC's 2022 census before re-adding. For the historical ~2,589 Wikipedia-sourced edits from earlier runs in other countries, I'd like your view: should I revert them wholesale as well, or audit against each national census first and keep the ones that match? Either way, no new edits will run until this is resolved. Thanks again for flagging. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 20:26, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I think it's fine to keep correct additions, but I have no capacity to check for other countries than Ecuador. When I checked the edits I saw a lot of mistakes also in other countries.
Ecuador census data is not that easy, there are different numbers for rural and urban area and especially for cities there is different data.
Also cantons must not be confused with cities or parishes like in Saraguro Q2224289.
For provinces and cantons I already imported curated data from the original sources with citations. You can look at one of the items for examples. Best, QQuinindé (talk) 20:46, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Understood — given the mistakes weren't limited to Ecuador, I'll revert all ~2,589 historical Wikipedia-sourced P1082 statements rather than trying to salvage them, not just today's 103. Re-additions, if any, will only use INEC 2022 data for Ecuador (strictly distinguishing cities vs cantons vs parishes — thanks for the Saraguro example and the curated canton references, I'll use those as the format template) and equivalent national statistical-office sources with proper P248/P854 citations for other countries. The bot stays paused until I can validate the pipeline end-to-end on a small sample. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 20:56, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, that sounds good. QQuinindé (talk) 17:24, 29 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Additions of descriptions in one edit

[edit]

Hello, would it be possible that your bot group in one edit all the new descriptions? At the moment they may quickly clutter one's watchlist, e.g. on Carlo Rubbia (Q187199): Italian particle physicist where you added 98 descriptions in 98 differents edits. I know that are also some concerns related to the growing history of items, as each new version get stored, so that would also help in that regards. Thanks, --Thomas Kerboul (BGE) (talk) 05:57, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thomas, thanks for the heads-up—it's fixed. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 00:58, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Descriptions

[edit]

Hi. There are several problems with the descriptions you're adding with your bot:

  1. First of all, they are far too long. The Swedish (sv) description in soul (Q9165) is four lines long on my phone, and biological determinism (Q252962) five lines long. It seems like you have misunderstood Wikidata's short description with something like mw:Extension:TextExtracts. They are different things and serve different purposes. Wikidata's descriptions are only to disambiguate two objects with the same label. They are not index summary (Q1283759), which your edits look like.
  2. They start with capital letters ("Själ eller psyke är de mentala förmågorna hos en levande varelse: förnuft, karaktär, känsla, medvetande, minne, perception, tänkande et cetera")
  3. They start with the label ("Själ eller psyke är de mentala förmågorna hos en levande varelse: förnuft, karaktär, känsla, medvetande, minne, perception, tänkande et cetera")

Overall, it doesn't seem like you have read or understood Help:Description at all. Familiarize yourself with our guidelines and revert your edits, otherwise I'll do it. Nirmos (talk) 04:38, 11 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I am proceeding with the corrections. Thank you for the heads-up. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 08:16, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Occupations

[edit]

I'm really excited you've taken an interest in trying to improve and systematise wikidata's coverage of occupations, which is so potentially valuable.

But I do wonder if the best first step would be a really thorough and complete and solid matching of wikidata items to ESCO Occupation ID (P4652) ? This has the advantage of being more granular than ISCO-08 occupation class (P8283), while broadly compatible with it. It also has the hugely important plus of being translated into 20 languages; and it has quite detailed definitions as to just what each class is intended to encompass.

IMO making sure that this is well-populated first, and really sanity checking that the classes properly do match our items, would be the way to build the most secure foundation for further work.

Here's a query tinyurl.com/kr9r8va6 that compares what items at the moment have matches with ISCO-08, ESCO, and ISCO-88, as well as the Portuguese CPP-2010 and the Swedish SSYK-2012 (for each of which we have a handful of matches). At the moment there is still only a fraction of either ESCO or ISCO-08 that has been matched; and in some cases some of the items that they are matched to are not well integrated into our subclass of (P279) hierarchy.

If we could get to a much more complete and systematic matching, that would give much more of a chance to check robustness, such as eg when we go up a level in the ESCO hierarchy from narrower to broader, are our items also related, do those corresponding items also go in the direction from narrower to broader, and are the ESCO relations compatible with those in other hierarchies. (For example, ESCO classification 2261 "dentist" seems to include as sub-classes 2261.x various occupations that probably would not fit in to our notion of dentist (Q27349) (and wouldn't require the prerequisites at Q27349#P4967. Does this mean that ESCO 2261 should not be matched to dentist (Q27349), but instead to some umbrella term like dental staff (Q69944734) ? Or, that sub-classes in ESCO don't necessarily follow a strict subclass of (P279) relationship ?

One other current annoyance is that ISCO-88 occupation class (P952) at the moment actually contains a mixture of ISCO-88 and ISCO-08 values, because the latter wasn't differentiated with a separate property until 2020. Indeed the Mix'n'match catalog 148 is still even now connected to ISCO-88 occupation class (P952) and populating the wrong property, when its data is for ISCO-88. I started going down the list checking in August 2022 (cf query https://w.wiki/5dgM ), moving the wrong values to P8283 when they were wrong and putting in the P952 values instead; but something came up before I got much beyond 2xxx, and I never got back to it.

A further issue is that ISCO-08 occupation class (P8283) can be used as a classification for many occupations, as well as a single identifier for the whole group -- and at the moment we are doing both. These uses really ought to be distinguished with qualifiers {{P|4390) = exact match (Q39893449) when ISCO-88 is an identifier, and mapping relation type (P4390) = broad match (Q39894595) when it is being used as a classification.

IMO all this should be sorted out, as a prerequisite, and made really robust here first, before any attempt to build further outwards from ISCO-08 or ESCO. Would you agree? Jheald (talk) 18:40, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

After reading your message i ran SPARQL over all of Wikidata. 1,675 ISCO-08 occupation class (P8283) statements in total; 1,672 of them already carry a mapping relation type (P4390) qualifier (99.8%). What stands out: SPARQL shows 5,879 occupation Q-items (P31=Q12737077) have no ISCO-08 occupation class (P8283) statement at all. Where would you focus first? Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 14:09, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Maris Dreshmanis: Thanks, Maris.
Yes, I went through and added mapping relation type (P4390) qualifiers over the weekend, after I had posted the above. I think we actually now have full (or very close to full) coverage for items with mapping relation type (P4390) = exact match (Q39893449) matches to ISCO-08 classes (also marked with instance of (P31) = occupation group according to ISCO-08 (Q108300140), though not always as the highest ranked P31 statement).
So I think almost all further items are likely to have mapping relation type (P4390) = broad match (Q39894595) (and will therefore be items that should not be marked with instance of (P31) = occupation group according to ISCO-08 (Q108300140)).
You'll see I have also added broader concept (P4900) qualifiers, which (IMO) can help to make the system a bit more easily readable and navigable. I have left query https://w.wiki/PFdV on the P8283 talk page, to easily track P8283 statements that don't have a broader concept (P4900) qualifier, and the value that might be added (though it's always worth sanity-checking these). Also query https://w.wiki/P7LU to identify anything tagged to an ISCO groups that doesn't as yet appear to have an item with instance of (P31) = occupation group according to ISCO-08 (Q108300140).
I have also tried to clean up some of the ISCO-88 occupation class (P952) ("old ISCO") statements that had been wrongly assigned. The Mix'n'match catalog now points to the correct (ISCO-08) property, and is pretty much fully matched.
So yes: I think a good next step would be to try to classify some more of the occupation items that have no ISCO-08 occupation class (P8283) statement at all. (And also, in time, sanity-check these against our subclass of (P279) tree and vice-versa).
My first focus over the weekend was trying to match to ESCO Occupation ID (P4652) using OpenRefine, because ESCO is such a useful resource, which gives us a more detailed classification, and gives us ISCO for free with any matches. So that seemed a good first step.
Otherwise, to confirm ISCO matches, ISCO-08 Index of Occupational Titles (Q108320749) (url at Q108320749#P953) is a good source to be able to reference against, if the occupation is explicitly listed there. If not in the list there then based on heuristic (P887) = inferred from superclass (Q84425101) may also be available as a possible reference as a fall-back, if our class tree matches the ISCO classification (which it often does, but sometimes doesn't). I saw you added a reference to the copy of ISCO on the ESCO site a few times -- which is good if the occupation is actually explicitly mentioned on the page there; but it did seem a couple of times that this had been added as a reference when the specific occupation was not actually mentioned on the site, which is not appropriate and can even be misleading.
There are probably more ESCO matches that could be found, and/or more that could/should be created. (I hope I have now matched a lot of the lower-hanging fruit. My planned next steps would be (a) to try to find where we have an item for the corresponding field of work, eg a particular form of engineering, and then consider creating an item related to it by practiced by (P3095) / field of this occupation (P425), if I am sure no such item can be found already existing; and also (b) to try to really burn down the remaining unmatched first-level ESCO occupations (eg classification dddd.x but not dddd.x.y). But I'm going to be away from the internet for about a week from tomorrow).
One thing I think to beware of is that the "synonyms" or "alternative names" listed on the ESCO pages often actually are not -- we would probably consider them subclasses, or alternatively to be related items partially coincident with (P1382) the proper match. So it's important (I think) not to add these as alt-labels unless we're really sure that's what they are.
Our ESCO Occupation ID (P4652) property is supposed to be 1:1 with our classes (or almost always), so I've been wondering what the best way should be to code these items as ESCO sub-occupations. Perhaps ESCO Occupation ID (P4652) = novalue with qualifier broader concept (P4900) pointing to the item that does have the 1:1 matching, with a the reference giving the ESCO page and subject named as (P1810) for how the sub-occupation is named there. Does that seem a reasonable approach to you?
Of course, the other thing to do is to keep kicking the tyres on the matches we do have.
In particular, does the match we are stating correspond to how the item is described in all current languages (and all of the wiki-links)? The danger is an item that links to two different concepts across two different groups of languages -- for example, as I raised in this thread at Project Chat, it looks to me as if official (Q599151) "official" might be an example of this, with the right inter-wiki for some languages perhaps being senior civil servant (Q105434600) "high civil servant" instead, and the correct relation to senior government official (Q108290289) "senior government officials" unclear. We have to catch as many of these conflations and/or erroneous assignments as we can, before they get translated into more languages, making any problems that much bigger and more work.
For the same reason I think we need to try to get the practiced by (P3095) / field of this occupation (P425) pairings and the corresponding subclass trees on both sides as solid as we can, with as few wrong or contradictory or ambiguous subclass of (P279) assignments up the trees as we can find. And, towards this, it is helpful to try to think up and add as many constraint checks on the properties as we can, and as many sanity-check queries, and try to resolve them.
That's what I meant above about trying to make everything we have already as robust and solid as possible being the key task at the moment, to try to build the most secure foundation for further work. So, yes, at this stage I think trying to add as many ESCO Occupation ID (P4652) assignments as we can, and to add ISCO-08 occupation class (P8283) classifications wherever we can, do seem to me to be very key parts of what it would be good to do as a first priority. Descriptions at Joseph Stalin (Q855)

[edit]

The descriptions, basically "linguist, Soviet Union", that your bot added to Joseph Stalin were reverted on 18 May 2026, as they were not really fitting of course. However, the bot re-added these descriptions again today; see here. Difool (talk) 13:34, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Similarly at Guy Parmelin (Q121160), the president of Switzerland, which is described as a "farmer". Samoasambia ✎ 10:17, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
My mistake and my oversight — thank you for honking once again. On June 25, the bot added 10 more descriptions, I deleted them all and checked that there was nothing left of the previous visits. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 10:41, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
The bot blindly took the first profession from the list, which is exactly the worst option for people with multiple roles. Deleted all of his 23 "farm" descriptions from this item. Thanks for the signal. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 10:43, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Grammatically wrong Icelandic descriptions

[edit]

Hey there. I've noticed that you added a lot of descriptions to articles in Icelandic that are grammatically incorrect. You added the descriptor "Hagfræðingur frá Bandaríkin" to numerous articles about American economists, which should be "Hagfræðingur frá Bandaríkjunum". I feel like having a descriptor that's grammatically wrong at a glance is kinda worse than just not having one. TKSnaevarr (talk) 21:09, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Maris Dreshmanis Please revert your bot's Icelandic descriptions. A large majority of them are grammatically incorrect, and manually reverting them would take forever. TKSnaevarr (talk) 22:28, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
You're completely right, and I'm sorry that it took two messages - I was on a 8,500 km car trip and didn't read the messages. The descriptions were published without the Icelandic grammar. I am deleting all the Icelandic descriptions of my bot. If you notice any survivors, tell them I'll take them down too. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 10:55, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Remove ru-description added by the bot

[edit]

Hi. Could you please revert/remove the Russian-language descriptions you added? They are all incorrect and need to be revised. The correct form is not “политик, Перу” but “перуанский политик.” Mitte27 (talk) 02:40, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

And also there is the bot User:Mr.Ibrahembot for exact same task, but which adds correct descriptions.
@Maris Dreshmanis can you please revert all descriptions made by your bot and instead focus on adding translations for the bot above, if you want? Well very well (talk) 10:06, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
A counter honest question. Wikidata is fourteen years old, Ibrahim's bot and other descriptive bots have been working for years — and every cell my bot filled in was empty: tens of thousands of items without description in Icelandic, Russian, Slovenian, and fifty languages. I checked before recording — my bot never overwritten anyone, there was just nothing there. So the honest question is: why were these cells still empty in 2026? Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 12:15, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hm... I'm not exactly sure, but from what I know, Russian and Ukrainian languages (and maybe these 50 others) are not yet present in Mr.Ibrahembot (I don't know other description bots, unfortunately) ― we with Mitte27 plan on fixing that. Well very well (talk) 04:17, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
You're right. My bot's error. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 11:51, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Multiple professions, multiple citizenships

[edit]

Hey there. In Special:Diff/2506679712 I removed your bot edit. There will be persons with multiple citizenships (because of historical statehood changes) or multiple professions. This guy's citizenship at birth is not the same as when he was active as a diplomat. If you're gonna run this bot again, please make sure you run it where there's only one profession and one citizenship. Thanks, Ponor (talk) 13:46, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

You're right. My bot took the first citizenship and the first profession in cases when there are not many professions and nationalities. My mistake when setting up the bot. Erroneous descriptions are corrected or deleted. Maris Dreshmanis (talk) 12:21, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I'm Madamebiblio. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent description edits to Q44008911 didn't meet the Wikidata description guidelines. Descriptions should appear as though they were in the middle of a sentence, typically start with a lowercase letter, and written from a neutral point of view. For example, "pop singer" would be a better description than "He is the best pop singer." If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks!  Madamebiblio (talk) 16:59, 25 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Slovenian

[edit]

Hey, I've seen this diff and I suggest to stop adding Slovenian labels unless a genitive case system is implemented for your bot. Labels are grammatically incorrect (for Q76358 it should be "novinar iz nemškega rajha" or even better to just omit the Third Reich completely and say "nemški novinar"). Some other labels, like in Q6179759 are nonsensical as well. If you were to proceed with the suggestion you should also account for gender-based labels (ie. "nemški novinar" for males but "nemška novinarka" for females). I think a removal of [sl] labels is better given the scale of errors introduced. I'm keen on hearing back from you. Reverting MarisDreshmanisBot edits

[edit]

Hi, I'm planning to revert the MarisDreshmanisBot edits where problematic descriptions were added based on P27 and P106. I just downloaded all the edits of the account, and I've made a script to revert them. I'll flood flag myself before starting. Samoasambia ✎ 15:16, 16 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
