[!NOTE] > Written by gpt-5.6-sol. ## For humans A failed registry write could change the running app's workspace state without changing the durable registry. Every registry update now becomes visible only after its atomic file replacement is durably committed, so a failed write leaves memory and disk in agreement. ## What changed - Route every workspace-entry mutation through one private publish-after-write path. - Build replacement registry state instead of mutating cached entries. - Open, write, fsync, and close the temporary file explicitly before replacement; on POSIX, sync the parent directory after rename. - Keep the Windows guarantee honest: the file is flushed and atomically renamed; directory fsync is skipped because Node/libuv rejects it there. - Invalidate the cache if post-rename durability fails, preserve write and fsync errors over close/cleanup errors, and close every opened descriptor. - Preserve the distinct empty-state rules for share mounts and shared channels. - Test failed writes against both the live cache and a freshly opened registry. ## Verification Exact head: 92457f04e8f8e95b55d0e09153006f2a09f57222; tree: 437ad82f0e9f7d106e01def36c0b3234e9db6f08. - Complete strict JavaScript workflow: 8,667 passed, 34 skipped, zero failed. - Frozen install, locked Cargo fetch, capped workspace-engine daemon build, root typecheck, and full root tests passed with all three required strict proof flags enabled. - Registry store suite: 47/47 passed. - Read-only composition onto current main (446b9a3d) is conflict-free with tree 07a7ead231b7bee1b7bbb3ee635af2ffc43558ec and stable patch b93f65f995859bca2b256e8e456ab9dce7b4ff11. - git diff --check passed and the worktree is clean. - The Rust workflow is not selected for this desktop-only change. ## Review - CodeRabbit first required pre-rename file fsync and post-rename directory fsync. A second review challenged reliance on Node's flush implementation path. This head uses an explicit descriptor lifecycle and covers its error ordering. - Independent Sol correctness review: MERGE, no blocking findings. Its one low test suggestion for simultaneous write and close failure was added before the final gate. - Direct claude-opus-4-6 counterexample review of the explicit descriptor correction: MERGE, no findings (session aa89403b-539f-4096-b543-266e9b7cd5a7). - GitHub Codex reviewed exact head with no major issue; CodeRabbit approved exact head with no actionable comment.

📝 Walkthrough

Workspace registry state now updates only after durable atomic file replacement succeeds. Failed writes preserve in-memory and durable workspace state.

Changed subsystems

  • Routes registry mutations through shared copy-on-write updateWorkspaceEntry.
  • Flushes temporary files before atomic replacement.
  • Syncs the parent directory on POSIX after replacement.
  • Invalidates the cache after post-replacement directory-sync failures.
  • Cleans up temporary files while preserving the original persistence error.
  • Preserves distinct empty-state behavior for shared channels and share mounts.

Material risks

  • Post-replacement directory-sync failures invalidate the cache and require a reload.
  • Empty shared-channel sets are removed, while empty mount sets remain durable tombstones.
  • Registry mutations depend on atomic replacement and temporary-file cleanup.

Verification

  • Tests cover failed remote, shared-channel, and shared-view writes against live and newly opened registries.
  • Tests verify cache isolation, durable-state preservation, cleanup, flush-before-rename ordering, POSIX directory-sync failures, and Windows behavior.
  • Reported verification passed for JavaScript, registry store tests, typechecks, builds, and related checks, with 47/47 registry store tests passing.

Walkthrough

Registry writes now flush and atomically replace registry files, sync supported directories, clean up temporary files, and recover cache state after post-replacement failures. Workspace mutations use copy-on-write updates. Tests cover failure, ordering, retry, and platform behavior.

Changes

Registry persistence and workspace mutations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Atomic persistence and cache recovery
apps/desktop/src/workspaces/registryStore.ts
Registry writes flush temporary files, rename them atomically, sync supported parent directories, clean up failures, and preserve the original error.
Workspace mutation migration
apps/desktop/src/workspaces/registryStore.ts
Workspace updates use updateWorkspaceEntry. Empty channel sets are removed, while empty mount sets remain durable tombstones.
Persistence and mutation failure coverage
apps/desktop/src/workspaces/registryStore.test.ts
Tests verify unchanged cached and durable state after failures, cleanup behavior, persistence ordering, cache reloads, retries, and Windows-specific behavior.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 92457

Registry state is now published only after durable file replacement, with failed writes leaving memory and disk aligned. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks and review.

P1 Badge Skip directory fsync on platforms that reject it

On macOS, fsyncSync on an opened directory can fail with EINVAL, but this branch runs for every non-Windows platform. Consequently every registry mutation can rename the new file successfully and then throw, so creating a workspace reports failure even though the workspace was registered; retrying then reports that it is already attached. Handle the platform/filesystem's unsupported-directory-sync error rather than treating it as a failed registry update.
