"Getting Started with Java Certification" tutorial says SE 21 is latest cert, when SE 25 exam was just released #242

Thank you for your report! I just got in touch with the author of this page for updates.
It seems to me that this issue is the same as 201?No, but I did also mention that the Java 25 exam was released (I believe in the last week) as a comment on my closed ticket #201 for the article being updated to Java 21 as the latest when Java 17 was still showing a couple of years after the Java 21 exam had come out.
That is I also cross posted a notice also to the end of the old issue #201 (comment) , but left the details to this new ticket (which includes updated links to e.g. new test prep materials like Enthuware's current Java 25 exam page they had prepared in anticipation of the release, guessing at exam content -- I contacted them also to notify as their page is out of date and they said they are making more updates soon), and pointers to which parts of the article would likely need to be updated this time.
Thanks
OK, thank you. The references to the 25 certification should be done soon.
FYI: Enthuware has updated their test prep syllabus for Java 25 (archived as is at https://web.archive.org/web/20260512201032/https://enthuware.com/oca-ocp-java-certification-resources/297-ocp-java-25-exam-syllabus ) since 2 days ago,
and launched a practice test simulator for Java 25 at https://enthuware.com/java-certification-mock-exams/oracle-certified-professional/ocp-java-25-exam-1z0-831 (archived as is at https://web.archive.org/web/20260512201317/https://enthuware.com/java-certification-mock-exams/oracle-certified-professional/ocp-java-25-exam-1z0-831 ). Their new textbook isn't out yet, but given they knew what features came out with Java 25 and had pre-prepared the other material, probably it will land soon as well. Thanks!
Reacted by Omorubore oluwatobiUpdate: Looks like Enthuware (a 3rd party) had actually launched only a placeholder for their practice test simulator.
However, the point of this ticket, the Oracle Java 25 Certification Exam and associated course, did go live on 2026-05-08 (just not the 3rd party Enthuware prep material which looks ready but just says "Coming soon" when one attempts to purchase it).
E.g. here is a screenshot of my purchase and appointment confirmation for my own Java 25 certification exam:
The purchase flow is most easily reached from the associated course which also launched on 2026-05-08, available at https://mylearn.oracle.com/ou/learning-path/become-a-java-se-25-developer/161648 .
Thanks!
Thank you again for your report! I just pushed the page with the update Jeanne sent me.
Thanks!
There appear to be a few issues with the update (in the latest version, archived as is at https://web.archive.org/web/20260518174230/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ ).
First, the new line listing the 1Z0-831 Java SE 25 Developer Professional exam ends with "For Java 21; the most recent certification exam available" (says Java 21 instead of Java 25):
1Z0-831: Java SE 25 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions in 120 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 21; the most recent certification exam available.
Then, the "the most recent certification exam available" text has NOT yet been removed from the subsequent line for the 1Z0-830 Java SE 21 Developer Professional exam:
1Z0-830: Java SE 21 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions in 120 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 21; the most recent certification exam available.
Finally, for the 1Z0-829 Java SE 17 line there has been a regression in the latest version https://web.archive.org/web/20260518174230/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ vs the previous version archived at https://web.archive.org/web/20260508180237/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ , as that line has now has "Java 17 is the most recent certification exams available" added (which is not true, Java 25 is the most recent and Java 21 had an exam for years already):
1Z0-829: Java SE 17 Developer exam - 50 questions, passing 68% - This Java 17 is the most recent certification exams available.
Note the duration of the Java 17 and Java 11 tests, 90 minutes instead of 120 for Java 21 and Java 25, is not mentioned, but may be useful to include. (The earlier Java SE 8 Programmer I and II exams and the Java Foundations exam are also all 120 minutes long like the most recent Java Developer Professional exams.)
Thanks again!
Thank you again for your comment! A fix is on its way.
As for the detail of the exam: I prefer to keep it that way, since these details are found on the Certification pages. Thanks!
I observe that in your latest version, archived at https://web.archive.org/web/20260520231713/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/,The text was updated to fix
1Z0-831: Java SE 25 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions in 120 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 21; the most recent certification exam available.
to
1Z0-831: Java SE 25 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions in 120 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 25; the most recent certification exam available.
("For Java 25; the most recent certification exam available`" instead of "For Java 21; the most recent certification exam available." on the Java 25 line.)
BUT, the text "the most recent certification exam available" remains on the Java 21 and Java 17 exams (also mentioned above), when we are on Java 25 now for the latest:
1Z0-830: Java SE 21 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions in 120 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 21; the most recent certification exam available.
1Z0-829: Java SE 17 Developer exam - 50 questions, passing 68% - For Java 17; the most recent certification exam available.Again, it seems "the most recent certification exam available" should be removed from these lines.
Unless by the sentence in your last comment
As for the detail of the exam: I prefer to keep it that way, since these details are found on the Certification pages.
you mean the official Oracle pages say the Java 21 and Java 17 exams are "the most recent certification available" but the linked exam pages, e.g. https://education.oracle.com/java-se-21-developer-professional/pexam_1Z0-830 do NOT contain that text. It is fine by me if you confirm this intentional on your part but it looks like a mistake as these are not the most recent Java certifications.
[side note: to be clear I do not get any chance to review and approve the Oracle team's changes and am not given previews of the changes before they occur on the livesite, not a complaint just clarifying for others.]
Thanks so much!
Thank you again for your report! I just sent a fix for the "latest..." part.
What I mean is that the exam detail (number of questions and time) are on the linked page, so I prefer not to copy them on our page.I think this can be marked resolved as of your latest version (archived as is at https://web.archive.org/web/20260521055404/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ ).
(Of course your team will also probably update it again later when the Java 25 practice exam books come out.)
[For other readers]
For those who have trouble finding where to buy the exam (not just read about it from the links above), I can confirm it really is available to purchase and schedule immediately (and has been since 2026-05-08 ).E.g. here is a screenshot of my purchase and appointment confirmation for my own Java 25 certification exam:
(I scheduled it a little bit further out as not in a huge rush as I already have the next most recent Java certification, Java 21, https://catalog-education.oracle.com/ords/certview/sharebadge?id=54572D8F73F8F2E3F6CD22925E86958C3EDDAB4D5D16F5B2FC0A929DA9C7FFB1 , thanks in large part to dev.java's materials ).
The purchase flow is most easily reached from the associated course which also launched on 2026-05-08, available at https://mylearn.oracle.com/ou/learning-path/become-a-java-se-25-developer/161648 (exam can be purchased alone without buying the course / learning subscription by clicking "Register now" at the bottom and signing in).
- moved this from Backlog to Done in @Drovie's untitled project
on May 21, 2026 (Personal note since I commented that I had purchased the Java 25 exam above. I purchased above but deferred the Java 25 exam as I can't afford a new Windows (or Mac) machine and my Linux laptop (and backup Windows machine) don't meet the specifications for the new exam software. I already exceeded my personal development budget this year spending $5K on the Oracle Learning Subscription earlier which helped me take and pass the Java 21 exam (which already I had to take on a different machine as my normal personal laptop does not support the new exam software), so I will be taking it later when I have the funds.).
Hello dev.java team!
I write regarding content that just went out of date on the excellent "Getting Started with Java Certification" tutorial, https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ (archived as is at: https://web.archive.org/web/20260508180237/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ ).
This certifications article added in #31 does not yet mention the Java 25 certification exam, which is now available (see bottom of this issue comment for links and images).
Specifically, re: the section:
[should already say "at least six exams" as previously requested in an earlier ticket]
Should probably be updated to say there are currently "at least seven Java certification exams".
Then the listing of exams, which currently starts:
Should probably be updated to begin with:
(And in the existing Java 21 line "=the" should be "the"; and the URLs for exams that begin with "java-ee-7-application-developer" may have newer, more relevant URLs available that might be preferred.)
Then the line:
(Note my previous ticket noting it was showing Java 17 this year in 2026 long after the Java 21 exam came out in 2024 did not include the typos of extra "=the" or "=29" , etc.)
Should be updated to:
Then, the "Should I wait for Java 25?" section can probably be removed as there is no LTS after Java 25 to wait for an exam to be released for.
Under "What is covered?",
should be updated to say "Java 25 ones are" and copy the list from https://mylearn.oracle.com/ou/exam/java-se-21-developer-professional-1z0-830/105037/139080/220555 .
Under "How to study for the Java 21 certification?",
can be updated to:
The link to the Sybex book by Jeanne Boyarsky (the article author) can be updated to their new Java 25 version which has a placeholder at https://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Certified-Professional-Developer-Study/dp/1394434278 .
The link to the Enthuware study materials can be updated to https://enthuware.com/oca-ocp-java-certification-resources/297-ocp-java-25-exam-syllabus until their full materials are released for Java 25 as they had already prepared a preparation page speculating on the exam contents before it was released.
Note, there is an open PR with a somewhat misleading title that refers to mentioning Java 25 as upcoming instead of Java 21, not updating the article yet to support Java 25 as the main / latest exam:
There is an open PR #202 titled "Revise Java certification overview for Java 25" but consistent with the branch name which is java-21-cert at this time, the open PR only includes the changes to target Java 21 as current and mention Java 25 as upcoming consistent with my earlier ticket #201 ; the changes were pushed live by Jose before the PR has submitted.
(See also my earlier ticket #201 for update from Java 17 to Java 21 , article in that case was a couple of years out of date, right now 25 JUST came out, but still may be useful to notify).
Links to Java 25 certification pages and screenshots:
Of course your team may want to just update the "Should I wait for Java 25" section and wait to recommend it over 21 until more test preparation material has been released, but I do think Enthuware will be very fast as they will likely just add a couple of sections to their existing Java 17 + 21 combined book and re-release it.
Thanks to your team and site I obtained the Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 21 Developer credential ( https://catalog-education.oracle.com/ords/certview/sharebadge?id=54572D8F73F8F2E3F6CD22925E86958C3EDDAB4D5D16F5B2FC0A929DA9C7FFB1 ). Hopefully by continuing to use this site, the recommended Enthuware material, the official Oracle documentation, and the Oracle course, I will be able to also obtain the Java SE 25 Professional Developer credential.
Thanks very much for all this excellent content!
