What

Last of seven. Docs and release notes for the stack.

  • shared/docs/installer_and_updater_architecture.md: macOS install-auto with no native installer or helper; FUSE is not shipped and users install stock macFUSE 5 themselves; the one-time legacy helper removal (keybase uninstall --components=helper, one administrator prompt, not asked again after a cancel); clipaths as the only step that needs root, linking keybase and git-remote-keybase in /usr/local/bin to the binaries in /Applications/Keybase.app; what keybase fuse status reports; and the updater's rename fallback, which swaps Contents in place as the user and otherwise fails, never asking for administrator permissions. The link to the install command's source is corrected.
  • go/kbfs/README.md: default mount points per platform; the redirector is Linux-only; on macOS install macFUSE 5 or later yourself, allow its kext, and mount at a directory you own (the system volume is read-only, so /keybase cannot be created); --use-system-fuse and the branded-FUSE note are gone.
  • shared/desktop/CHANGELOG.txt, two user-facing bullets:
    • macOS: Keybase no longer bundles its own FUSE. To use Keybase in Finder, install macFUSE 5 or later from macfuse.io, then turn on Finder access in the Files tab. The old Keybase FUSE and its helper are removed after one administrator prompt. The first time Keybase appears in Finder, macOS asks once whether "kbfs" may access files on a network volume; click Allow.
    • macOS: /keybase and /Volumes/Keybase are gone. Your files are at /Volumes/Keybase (your Mac username), shown as Keybase in Finder. If you added a keybase line to /etc/synthetic.conf for /keybase, you can remove it.

Testing

  • Docs only. yarn lint:all and yarn test:unit pass at the top of the stack.

Notes

  • The release owner must keep the two CHANGELOG bullets when the release's changelog commit rewrites that file.

- installer_and_updater_architecture.md: macOS install-auto, the fuse
and clipaths components, the updater's rename fallback, and the
one-time legacy helper retirement, with KeybaseInstaller gone.
- go/kbfs/README.md: the redirector is Linux-only; on macOS install
macFUSE 5 or later yourself and mount at a directory you own.
- CHANGELOG.txt: users install macFUSE from macfuse.io, the old FUSE and
helper are removed after one admin prompt, macOS asks once about
network volume access, and /keybase is replaced by
  /Volumes/Keybase (<user>).
The changelog says to turn on Finder access after installing macFUSE,
that /Volumes/Keybase is gone too, and that a synthetic.conf keybase line
can be removed. The kbfs README gives the macOS mount dir, and the
installer doc says clipaths links only the app's own tools.
