Problem and value

Archify ships four visual presets, and each one is named for the job it does: Classic as the stable default, Signal Flow for motion demos, Blueprint for engineering review, Editorial for release notes. None of them covers the case where the diagram is the artifact a reader came for — a portfolio piece, a personal project write-up, a product story. Put a Classic or Blueprint diagram at the top of a personal site and it reads like internal tooling that leaked.

Blossom fills that gap. It keeps the existing semantic palette and byte-identical SVG geometry, so no diagram changes shape or meaning. Only the presentation layer differs: rose-tinted neutrals, 1.75rem corner radii, a soft ambient glow, and circular badges instead of square ones.

No linked issue; this is a self-contained addition to an existing extension point (the preset registry), not a change to an existing preset.

Stability impact

  • Impact class: presentation-only, additive. visual_preset gains one accepted value (blossom) in meta; the four existing values and their rendering are untouched.
  • Existing behavior preserved: the runtime preset list grows from four to five entries, Archify.preset.cycle() reaches the new value, and the default remains classic. The geometry test in preset-tryon.test.mjs now asserts five variants normalize to the same canonical SVG, so a geometry regression in any preset fails the suite.
  • Intended compatibility change: meta.visual_preset: "blossom" is newly valid. Documents that do not use it render identically — the delivered template only grows by the new preset's CSS block and one menu entry.
  • Failure behavior: unchanged. The schema still rejects unknown preset values with the same path-prefixed message.

Tests run

Base: 72c750b (current main). Head: the commit on this branch.

cd archify && npm ci && npm test

Both revisions were run on the same machine and produce the same result:

revision tests pass fail skipped
72c750b (pristine) 1262 1238 17 7
this branch 1262 1238 17 7

The 17 failures are identical in both runs and are Windows-only environment cases, not regressions from this change: git init --template= hitting the \\.\nul invalid-argument bug (11 cases), git ls-files returning nothing for a checkout without a .git directory (4 cases), a preview child process reporting SIGTERM instead of a clean exit (1 case), and ERR_UNSUPPORTED_ESM_URL_SCHEME from passing a bare Windows path to the ESM loader (1 case). Three test files (generate-validators, generate-viewer, release-package-gates) abort with 0xC0000409 when the whole suite runs on Windows; they pass individually on both revisions. I did not run the browser-dependent jobs locally — remote CI is still required.

Focused test for this change: node --test test/preset-tryon.test.mjs → 6/6 pass.

Visual evidence

  • Evidence provided: preset-compare-contact-sheet.png below — the same diagram (examples/web-app-rendered.html, "Sample Web App Diagram"), same 1440×900 viewport, same default view, rendered in all five presets across both themes. The ten individual captures are in the same folder if a full-resolution look is needed.
  • Comparison conditions: identical input artifact, viewport 1440×900, device scale factor 1, default guided view, presets switched through the shipped runtime (Archify.preset.apply(...)) so the picker label and the data-preset on both <html> and the canonical SVG stay in sync.
  • Intended differences: background, panel treatment, corner radii, badge shape, and control marks. Classic reads cool blue; Blossom reads warm rose.
  • Unexpected differences: none observed. Geometry, node positions, labels, and edge routing are identical across all five.
  • Automated or browser checks: measured computed values in a real Chrome session — Blossom resolves --bg to #1a1116 (dark) and #fdf5f9 (light), --panel-border to #573747 / #e6c4d4, --arrow-emphasis to #f0a3c0 / #c2417a, the picker label to Blossom, and the diagram container radius to 28px (1.75rem). data-preset="blossom" reaches <html>, the <svg>, and the menu item.
  • Perceptual visual review: passed (five presets reviewed side by side at 1440×900 in both themes).

Generated artifacts

Regenerated from the final combined source, all committed on this branch:

  • archify/assets/template.html — via npm run generate:viewer (--check passes)
  • archify/renderers/shared/generated-validators.mjs — via npm run generate:validators (--check passes)
  • examples/*.html (5) and archify/examples/*.html (5) — via scripts/render-examples.mjs
  • examples/web-app.html — the architecture example that must carry the current template; it is the same render as web-app-rendered.html
  • examples/checkout-platform-delta.html + .receipt.json — via archify compare architecture ... --quality showcase --receipt
  • docs/gallery.html, docs/gallery/manifest.json, docs/gallery/artifacts/*.html (11) — via scripts/build-gallery.mjs docs
  • docs/assets/archify-live-proof.gif + .json — via scripts/build-readme-showcase.mjs
  • archify.zip — via scripts/build-zip.sh under Node 22

docs/guide.html and docs/start.html were rebuilt and are byte-identical to main, so they are not in the diff.

Two freshness notes:

  • The motion-proof GIF was re-recorded because its recorded artifactSha256 values track the gallery artifacts, which changed with the template. The new file is smaller (1,488,435 bytes vs 1,796,065) because it was captured on Windows with a local ffmpeg build; the frames, dimensions (960×540), frame count (54), and duration (5.4s) are unchanged, and the receipt is internally consistent. If you would rather have the canonical bytes, re-running scripts/build-readme-showcase.mjs on the CI image and amending is fine by me.
  • archify.zip is deterministic and verified byte-stable here (rebuilt to a second path and compared), but it was built on Windows under Node 22.23.2. The zip-freshness job will confirm it against the CI image.

Archify ships four presets, each named for the job it does: Classic as the
stable default, Signal Flow for motion demos, Blueprint for engineering review,
and Editorial for release notes. None of them covers the one case a personal
site actually needs — showing your own work — so a portfolio diagram ends up
looking like internal tooling.

Blossom fills that slot. It keeps the existing semantic palette and byte-identical
SVG geometry, so no diagram changes shape or meaning; only the presentation layer
differs: rose-tinted neutrals, 1.75rem corner radii, a soft ambient glow, and
circular badges in place of square ones.

Source changes:

- viewer/template.source.html: preset CSS for dark and light, the picker menu
entry, the swatch, and the runtime preset list
- archify/renderers/shared/i18n.mjs: en and zh-CN names, short labels, hints
- archify/schemas/common.schema.json and workflow.schema.json: accept "blossom"
  in meta.visual_preset
- archify/test/preset-tryon.test.mjs: cover the fifth preset in the picker,
  geometry, and runtime-list assertions

Regenerated outputs: the delivered viewer template, both example sets, the
gallery and its manifest, the README motion proof, the Checkout compare
artifact, and archify.zip (built with Node 22 via scripts/build-zip.sh).

npm test on a clean checkout reports the same result before and after this
change (1238 pass / 17 fail / 7 skipped on Windows; the 17 failures are
platform-only git and process-spawn cases already present on main).

📝 Summary

Reviewed base 72c750b and head 3e7122c. Adds the blossom preset to runtime support, schemas, localization, viewers, examples, and generated artifacts. Existing presets and the classic default remain compatible. Author-reported validation says focused tests pass (6/6). The full-suite result is reused evidence from the base revision: 1238 passed, 17 Windows-only failures, and 7 skipped. No observed CI results are supplied for the checked head. Browser and perceptual acceptance remain unverified. The working tree also contains an untracked .htmlhintrc.

The change adds the Blossom visual preset to the viewer template, examples, and gallery artifacts. It adds dark and light palettes, Blossom-specific layout styling, menu and badge markup, localization, preset registration, schema values, and tests. Generated artifact hashes, sizes, and receipts are also updated.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 3e712

Some small diagram labels in the new Blossom preset are difficult to read in both light and dark themes. Update the palette and regenerate artifacts before release where accessible presentation is required.

Full details: Contribution Scope

Explanation

The PR covers the user problem, one focused Blossom preset slice, compatibility impact, failure behavior, tests, visual evidence, and generated-artifact freshness. The implementation is coherent across viewer/template.source.html, schemas, localization, tests, and generated outputs. However, the change expands the visual_preset schema contract and the shipped preset behavior. CONTRIBUTING.md requires a linked issue or a recorded maintainer scope decision for new contracts or broad product behavior. The latest PR description explicitly says “No linked issue,” and the repository contains no recorded maintainer decision for Blossom.

Resolution

Add a linked issue or record a maintainer scope decision before merge. The record must cover the value of Blossom, compatibility and preserved behavior, non-goals, and the intended runtime/schema scope. Reference that record in the PR description.

Use theme-specific high-contrast Blossom text tokens.

The .t-dim labels use 9px semibold text on .c-mask, not the panel. Dark --text-dim has 3.657:1 contrast. Light --text-dim has 2.648:1, and --text-faint has 3.791:1. These normal-size labels fall below the 4.5:1 contrast threshold.

Use lighter tokens in dark mode and darker tokens in light mode. Update the source palette at archify/assets/template.html:493 and 528-529, then regenerate affected gallery artifacts.
