Fixes #463

Problem

export * from "<alias>" was silently dropped when scanning directories.

scanExports() only tried two things for the specifier: resolving it relative to the importing file, and mllyResolve(specifier) without a parent. Aliases (#shared/..., tsconfig paths) failed both, so the file's exports were skipped with a warning.

unimport already has a resolveId callback — it was only used for the injection step (resolveImports), never during scanning.

Fix

  • ScanDirExportsOptions gains an optional resolveId
  • Resolution now tries: relative path → user-supplied resolveId → mllyResolve with the importing file as parent
  • context.ts passes ctx.options.resolveId when scanning a directory and ctx.options when scanning a single file, so recursion carries it through
  • The warning now names the specifier and the file it came from

Verification

  • New test in test/scan-dirs.test.ts (temp dir + alias re-export): fails before, passes after
  • test/scan-dirs.test.ts: 14 passed
  • tsc --noEmit: exit 0; eslint: exit 0
  • Full suite compared against a stashed baseline: the only difference is the new test flipping from failing to passing; the pre-existing Windows snapshot failures are identical in both states

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Directory scans can now resolve re-exports using a custom resolver, including nested re-exports.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved resolution of star exports across relative paths, supported file extensions, and index files. Unresolved exports continue to be skipped with a warning.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Export scanning now passes resolver options through directory and recursive file scans. Star-export specifiers can be resolved relative to the importing file, with a configured resolver callback, or through module resolution.

Changes

Export specifier resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve nested star exports
src/types.ts, src/node/scan-dirs.ts
ScanDirExportsOptions adds an optional resolveId callback. Star-export resolution checks relative paths, then the callback, then module resolution. Recursive scans receive the same options.
Propagate resolver options
src/node/scan-dirs.ts, src/context.ts, test/scan-dirs.test.ts
Directory and file scans pass context options to export scanning. A test checks that a configured resolver enables exports from an aliased re-export, including a type export.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b5637

Aliases pointing to declaration-only directories can cause a directory scan to fail. This is a narrow case to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b5637

The resolver remains caller-controlled, and no new privilege escalation or security boundary bypass was established. However, rescanning a removed or retargeted alias can leave exports from its previous target registered, affecting dependency cleanup and configuration rollback.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Resolver-enabled aliases inherit target-only registry ownership. After an alias is removed, retargeted, or fails resolution during a rescan, imports from its previous target can remain registered until explicitly cleared. This newly exposes alias configuration rollback to an existing stale-state limitation; it does not establish a security exploit.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly reachable scope is files selected by the configured resolver and readable by the scanning process, plus import descriptors and generated output derived from their exports. Reaching this path requires influence over scanned source and a suitable caller-configured resolver; broader tenant or service exposure is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The caller supplies the resolver and retains responsibility for its mapping policy. The scanner normalizes returned paths and checks existence, but does not enforce an approved root. This is not a demonstrated sandbox bypass: recursive relative paths were already unrestricted, and downstream injection retains its resolver stage.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Target-based cleanup can preserve obsolete dependencies after alias removal or failed resolution. This affects ownership reconciliation and configuration rollback, but the inspected evidence does not establish an authorization or confidentiality consequence.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Track discovered imports by their owning scan root and reconcile each completed scan against that root's previous result, so alias retargeting or removal can revoke obsolete targets without clearing unrelated registry entries.

Handle declaration indexes returned by resolveId.

When relative resolution misses and resolveId returns a directory containing only index.d.ts, the extension probes miss it and the existence fallback returns the directory. The recursive scan passes that directory to readFile, so scanDirExports can reject with EISDIR. The merge-base code had no resolveId path for this alias.

Probe declaration-file indexes and accept the fallback only when it is a regular file.
