Summary

Added a "Getting started with USWDS code" section to CONTRIBUTING.md. This will help users get their local environments set up so that they can start developing for USWDS.

Thanks to @jeffpw-goog for getting this update started!

Note

To keep things in scope, I limited the changes in this PR to only add a new section for installing and building USWDS. In the future, I would like to look at how we can simplify this file and make it more up-to-date.

Breaking change

This is not a breaking change.

Problem statement

The contribution guide at https://github.com/uswds/uswds/blob/develop/CONTRIBUTING.md does not provide any details about how to develop USWDS, e.g. run locally, run tests, or format code. This would be useful to developers looking to submit a pull request.

Solution

Addiung a "Getting started with USWDS code" section before our instructions for submitting a PR will allow users to understand how to work with USWDS code.

Testing and review

  1. Confirm that the location for this new content makes sense
  2. Confirm the instructions are technically accurate
  3. Confirm there are no spelling or grammatical errors

Thanks @amyleadem for creating this section so all users can learn how to get started. Added a few non-blocking suggestions. I can approve once comments resolved.

Also, would it be more appropriate to @mention to the contributor in the PR description?

@finekatie I just tagged you for review - can you check the changes to make sure the copy updates meet your standards? (Note: There are a number of code spacing updates, but the content changes are in the "Submitting code contributions" section, lines 64-88)

I left a few potential changes but all optional and non-blocking!

question (non-blocking): Do you think there'd be any value adding a note to runt these before submitting PR? It's part of the PR checklist so may be unnecessary but it could also be a good addition for visibility

Thanks @mahoneycm. I lean towards relying on the PR checklist to communicate this, but will leave this comment open in case anyone else wants to include it. Curious what you all think.

Let's leave it only in the checklist for now, just to keep it simple

suggestion (non-blocking): Should we switch all the ordered list to all use 1. ? Or at least the lists affected by this work to reduce changed files.

I think it's worth making this change for consistency as well

Let's use simplified ordered lists throughout, as @mahoneycm suggested
