Summary

Added hint text and inline error message support to the Checkbox component, including a new usa-legend--error style and updated Storybook documentation.

Breaking change

This is not a breaking change.

Related issue

Related to #6530

Note for maintainers: This PR covers Checkbox only. The original issue also references Radio (and potentially other form controls) needing the same treatment. I'm planning Radio as a follow-up PR — happy to either keep this issue open until that lands, or close this one and open a new issue for Radio specifically, whichever you'd prefer.

Related pull requests

None yet. Will open a follow-up PR for Radio once this pattern is confirmed.

Problem statement

The Checkbox component's Twig template, Storybook stories, and Sass had no support for hint text or inline error messaging at the group (fieldset/legend) level. This meant developers using Checkbox groups had no documented, accessible pattern for communicating validation errors or contextual hints to users — inconsistent with components like Text Input, which already support this.

Solution

Added conditional hint (usa-hint) and error (usa-error-message, role="alert") markup to the Checkbox Twig template at the fieldset/legend level, with aria-describedby on the <fieldset> dynamically referencing whichever of hint/error (or both) are present. Added a usa-legend--error Sass modifier, mirroring the existing usa-label--error pattern. Updated Storybook stories with state and hint controls, plus three new stories demonstrating the pattern.

This follows the error-handling pattern from Text Input, per maintainer guidance on the issue, and applies it at the group level (rather than per-checkbox) since the hint/error describe the group's selection requirement as a whole.

Major changes

  • packages/usa-legend/src/styles/_usa-legend.scss: added .usa-legend--error modifier
  • packages/usa-checkbox/src/usa-checkbox.twig: added conditional hint/error markup and dynamic aria-describedby
  • packages/usa-checkbox/src/usa-checkbox.stories.js: added state/hint argTypes and three new stories (WithHint, WithError, WithHintAndError)

Testing and review

  1. Run npm start, open Storybook, navigate to Components → Form Inputs → Checkbox
  2. Check Default, With Hint, With Error, and With Hint And Error stories render as expected
  3. On the new stories, open the Accessibility addon tab — confirmed 0 violations, 16 passes
  4. npm run lint passes cleanly on all three changed files

Note: npm test and gulp typecheck could not be fully run locally due to environment-specific issues (Snyk requires org authentication I don't have access to; gulp typecheck's tsc spawn call doesn't resolve correctly on Windows). Verified manually via lint and Storybook's built-in accessibility checks instead — happy to address anything CI surfaces that I couldn't catch locally.

Maintainer scope clarification (ryparker, September 20, 2026): The closing reference has been changed to a related reference because this PR covers Checkbox only. The remaining form-control examples stay open in #6530; the planned Radio follow-up remains separate.

Checkbox markup changes require compatibility classification before release. Pages with multiple Checkbox groups using hints or errors can also receive duplicate description IDs, making group descriptions unreliable.

Full details: Breaking Change Declared

Explanation

The description contains exactly one template statement, “This is not a breaking change.” The pull-request diff changes markup and text content in packages/usa-checkbox/src/usa-checkbox.twig, including added markup at lines 5–12 and the changed legend at line 7. This matches the explicit failure condition. This assessment does not classify the design impact; that classification is for maintainers.

Resolution

Review the breaking-change classification with maintainers, then replace “This is not a breaking change.” with the applicable warning template statement: “:warning: This is potentially a breaking change.” or “:warning: This is a breaking change.”

Full details: Regression Test Targets The Change

Explanation

The PR changes production Sass in packages/usa-legend/src/styles/_usa-legend.scss by adding the .usa-legend--error rule. The authoritative diff contains only the Storybook story, Checkbox Twig template, and Sass file; it adds or modifies no Mocha *.spec.js or sass-true test. The untested path is the new .usa-legend--error behavior, including bold font weight and zero top margin.

Full details: New Api Surface Follow-Ups

Explanation

The diff adds the public .usa-legend--error class in packages/usa-legend/src/styles/_usa-legend.scss, so this check applies. The required entry in packages/uswds-core/src/styles/_notifications.scss is missing. The PR description's Related pull requests section says None yet; it does not name a uswds-site companion PR or state that one is still needed. This is a release checklist failure, not a code defect.

Resolution

Add a notification entry for the new Checkbox/legend API in packages/uswds-core/src/styles/_notifications.scss. Update the Related pull requests section to name the uswds-site companion PR or explicitly state that the companion PR is still needed.

Full details: Accessibility Verification Declared

Explanation

The PR changes form error association and ARIA attributes in usa-checkbox.twig (aria-describedby and role="alert"). The description reports Storybook's accessibility addon results, but it does not name any assistive technology or browser combinations. The required AT/browser matrix is missing.

Resolution

Update the Testing and review section with the tested assistive technology and browser pairs and the verification performed for the default, hint-only, error-only, and combined hint/error states. Record checks for the fieldset's aria-describedby references, the hint and error elements, and the error element's role="alert". Do not claim announcement behavior without hands-on assistive-technology testing.

Make hint and error IDs unique per checkbox instance.

packages/usa-checkbox/src/usa-checkbox.twig hard-codes both IDs and includes them in each fieldset’s aria-describedby. This shipped Twig component is a public webpack-consumed template, so consumers can render multiple instances with hints or errors on one document. Those instances then emit duplicate IDs and non-unique aria-describedby references. Add a per-instance identifier and derive both values from it.
