Storybook 10.6.0 .storybook/main.js CommonJS ESM configuration loader Node 20.19

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In Storybook 10.6.0, the configuration system is strictly ESM-only [1][2][3]. This marks a significant departure from older versions that supported CommonJS (CJS) in configuration files like .storybook/main.js [2][4]. Key Requirements and Constraints: 1. ESM-Only Configuration: The .storybook/main.js (or .storybook/main.ts) file must be valid ESM [5][2]. You cannot use CommonJS patterns such as require, module.exports, dirname, or filename directly [2][6]. 2. Handling CJS Constants: If your configuration requires constants like dirname or require, you must manually recreate them using Node.js built-in modules [2][4]: import { createRequire } from &#39;node:module&#39;; import { dirname } from &#39;node:path&#39;; import { fileURLToPath } from &#39;node:url&#39;; const filename = fileURLToPath(import.meta.url); const dirname = dirname(filename); const require = createRequire(import.meta.url); 3. Explicit File Extensions: In JavaScript-based configuration files (.storybook/main.js), extensionless relative imports are no longer supported [2][4]. You must provide the full file extension (e.g., import myFile from &#39;./my-file.js&#39;) to comply with Node.js ESM requirements [2][7]. 4. Node.js Compatibility: Storybook 10 requires Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+ (or 24+) [1][8][3]. This version requirement exists specifically to leverage native support for loading ESM modules via require() without needing experimental flags [6][8]. 5. Troubleshooting Node 20.19.0: Users encountering issues with Node 20.19.0 specifically—due to experimental module loading conflicts—have sometimes used NODE_OPTIONS=--no-experimental-require-module as a temporary workaround [9]. However, as of Storybook 10, the platform is designed to work natively with the specified Node versions [8][3].

Its main features include: - 💎 ESM-only to reduce install size - ↗️ CSF Next preview with better typesafety and autocompletion - 🏷 Improved tags-based filtering Coming soon: - 🧪 Familiar and ergonomic CSF test functions (experimental) This guide is meant to help you **upgrade from Storybook 9.x to 10** successfully! **Migrating from a Storybook version prior to 9?** You&`#39`;ll first need to upgrade to Storybook 9. Then you can return to this guide. ## Major breaking changes The rest of this guide will help you upgrade successfully, either automatically or manually. But first, there are some [breaking changes][full-migration-notes] in Storybook 10. Here are the most impactful changes you should know about before you go further: - Main configuration (`.storybook/main.js|ts`) and other presets must be valid ESM - Ecosystem updates - Node 20.19+ or 22.12+ is now required If any of these changes apply to your project, please read through the linked migration notes before continuing. If any of these new requirements or changes are blockers for your project, we recommend to continue using Storybook 8.x. You may wish to read the [full migration notes][full-migration-notes] before migrating. Or you can run the upgrade command below and we’ll try to take care of everything for you! ## Automatic upgrade To upgrade your Storybook, run the upgrade command in the root of your repository: This will: 1. Find all of the Storybook projects in your repository 2. For each project 1. Determine that none of the breaking changes apply to your project - If they do, you will receive instructions on how to resolve them before continuing 2. Upgrade your Storybook dependencies to the latest version 3. Run a collection of _automigrations_, which will: - Check for common upgrade tasks - Explain the necessary changes with links to more information - Ask for approval, then perform the task automatically on your behalf ## New projects To add Storybook to a project that isn’t currently using Storybook: This will: 1. Figure out which renderer (React, Vue, Angular, Web Components), builder (Webpack, Vite), or meta-framework (Next.js, SvelteKit) you’re using 2. Install Storybook 10 and auto-configure it to mirror project settings ## Troubleshooting The automatic upgrade should get your Storybook into a working state. If you encounter an error running Storybook after upgrading, here’s what to do: 1. Try running the `doctor` command to check for common issues (such as duplicate dependencies, incompatible addons, or mismatched versions) and see suggestions for fixing them. 2. If you’re running `storybook` with the `dev` command, try using the `build` command instead. Sometimes `build` errors are more legible than `dev` errors! 3. Check [the full migration notes][full-migration-notes], which contains an exhaustive list of noteworthy changes in Storybook 10. Many of these are already handled by automigrations when you upgrade, but not all are. It’s also possible that you’re experiencing a corner case that we’re not aware of. 4. Search Storybook issues on GitHub. If you’re seeing a problem, there’s a good chance other people are too. If so, upvote the issue, try out any workarounds described in the comments, and comment back if you have useful info to contribute. 5. If there’s no existing issue, you can file one, ideally with a reproduction attached. We’ll be on top of Storybook 10 issues as we’re stabilizing the release. If you prefer to debug yourself, here are a few useful things you can do to help narrow down the problem: 1. Try removing all addons that are not in the …[truncated] <title>MIGRATION.md</title> https://github.com/storybookjs/storybook/blob/v10.3.4/MIGRATION.md - From version 9.x to 10.0.0 - Core Changes - Local addons must be fully resolved - The `.storybook/main.*` file and other presets must be valid ESM - Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+ required - Require `tsconfig.json` `moduleResolution` set to value that supports `types` condition - `core.builder` configuration must be a fully resolved path - Removed x-only builtin tags ... #### The `.storybook/main.*` file and other presets must be valid ESM ... Storybook will load the `.storybook/main.*` file and any custom preset files as ESM files. Thus CJS constants (`require`, `__dirname`, `__filename`) will not be defined. ... ```ts import { createRequire } from &`#39`;node:module&`#39`;; ... import { dirname } from &`#39`;node:path&`#39`;; ... Additionally, **extensionless relative imports are no longer supported** in JavaScript-based configuration files (`.storybook/main.js`) and custom presets. All relative imports must now include explicit file extensions. ... This change aligns with Node.js ESM requirements, where relative imports must specify the full file extension. This applies to `.storybook/main.js` and any custom preset files. While TypeScript-based files (`.storybook/main.ts`) will continue to work with extensionless imports for now through automatic resolution, we recommend migrating to explicit extensions for consistency and better compatibility. ... - Use `.js` for JavaScript files ... - Use `.mjs` for ES modules - Use `.ts` for TypeScript files - Always include the extension in relative imports ... #### Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+ required ... Storybook 10 now requires Node.js version 20.19+ or 22.12+. We require these new ranges so Node.js supports `require(esm)` without a flag. ... #### Require `tsconfig.json` `moduleResolution` set to value that supports `types` condition ... **Required action:** Update your `tsconfig.json` to use a `moduleResolution` that supports the `types` condition: ... ```json { "compilerOptions": { "moduleResolution": "bundler" // or "node16"/"nodenext" } } ... - `"bundler"` (recommended for modern bundler-based projects) - `"node16"` or `"nodenext"` (Node.js 16+ module resolution) ... **Note:** If you&`#39`;re currently using `moduleResolution: "node"` (the old Node.js 10-style resolution), you&`#39`;ll need to upgrade to one of the supported values above. <title>Storybook 10</title> https://storybook.js.org/blog/storybook-10/ Storybook 10 contains one breaking change: it’s ESM-only. ESM-only requires a modern Node that supports `ESM require` (`20.16+`, `22.19+`, or `24+`). ... ```ts // .storybook/main.ts const config: StorybookConfig = { tags: { experimental: { defaultFilterSelection: &`#39`;exclude&`#39`; }, }, }; ``` <title>MIGRATION.md</title> https://github.com/storybookjs/storybook/blob/522d5f1d788e6104efb2daf5ca9c54b900cedaee/MIGRATION.md - From version 9.x to 10.0.0 - Core Changes - Local addons must be fully resolved - The `.storybook/main.*`-file must be valid ESM - Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+ required - Require `tsconfig.json` `moduleResolution` set to value that supports `types` condition - `core.builder` configuration must be a fully resolved path - Removed x-only builtin tags - Extensionless imports in JS-based preset files are no longer supported ... #### The `.storybook/main.*`-file must be valid ESM ... Storybook 10 no longer supports extensionless relative imports in JavaScript-based preset and configuration files (e.g., `.storybook/main.js`). All relative imports must now include explicit file extensions. ... This change aligns with Node.js ESM requirements, where relative imports must specify the full file extension. Make the Storybook configuration ESM-compatible and raise the Node.js floor. Storybook 10.6.0 loads .storybook/main.js as ESM. The current require, __dirname, and module.exports usage is not supported and can make storybook dev and storybook build fail before loading stories.

package.json declares Node >=20, which permits Node 20 versions below Storybook 10’s required 20.19+ floor. Convert .storybook/main.js to ESM and use "node": "^20.19.0 || >=22.12.0".

This upgrade currently prevents a normal install. At bc833550, the dependencies pair Storybook 10.6.0 with @storybook/test-runner 0.23.0, whose peer range excludes Storybook 10. The CI job fails at npm install with ERESOLVE, before the build or accessibility tests run. The breaking-change label refers to that contributor workflow, not the shipped component API.

Please update Storybook and the test runner together to compatible versions, with any required configuration changes and an updated lockfile. A clean install, Storybook build, and test-runner execution need to work on the supported Node versions. Ignoring npm's peer requirements would hide the conflict rather than establish that the upgrade works.
