Release 2025-04 follow-up #1645

Description

@stonebig

release date: mid-september 2025 (more AI energy)

wanted:

  • publish wppm as a standard wheel (a slightly breaking change)
  • generate wppm wheel in the cloud via github actions
  • WinPython local build moved to python script+TOML
  • WinPython cloud re-build logic is created on the cloud via github actions , now the only build published
  • local AI integration (onnxruntime for now)
  • numba-0.62.0 / numpy-2.3.2

next cycle:

  • opencv-python may come back when compatible with numpy-2.3
  • leaner local and cloud builds integration
  • free-threading 3.14
  • pip handling natively pylock.toml files (PEP-0751)
  • looking at arm building (today 13% marketshare, guessing will go 20% in 2026)

    audit trail:

    • uv look:
      • we may remove the python Docs and news.txt: 10.5 Mo less
      • use python - m module rather than module.exe
      • add debug symbols ?: 20Mo more....
      • fix in git pull: notice uv forgot to update bundled Sqlite to 3.49.1 (was 3.47.1)
    • rethink with cloud-as-the-builder in mind
      • get python "de base" (any python could be ok in pure theory)
      • build structure:
        • directory tree and pre-defined scripts,
        • other pre-installable things
      • add wheels
        • minimal wheel set:
          • winpython wppm is now a published wheel, so more of WinPython is moved to pylock.toml
          • minimal wheels pre-installed: pip, wppm, setuptools ?, wheel ?
        • install other wheels from pypi: would be cpu consuming ... 4' for whl, 12' for slim, unless uv like
        • and/or feed a wheelhouse
      • markdown, zip & publish:
        • markdown & diffing via wppm
        • zip via wppm or external tool: could be cpu consuming ... 3.5' for whl on mx9, 5' per object for slim on mx5
        • publish ... supposed easy from cloud... when all the rest is tackled
    • PEP 686: Make UTF-8 mode default in Python-3.15 r "PYTHONUTF8=1" was killing --movable and --fix ... apparently no more a problem, windows terminal may have helped
    • remark: Powershell7+Uses UTF-8 without BOM by default... so utf-8-SIG is to remove nowodays...
    • remove legacy terminal colorization in Powershell by @nevsal
    • RE-ORGANISATION non-backward compatible, to simplify in a pylock.toml direction way:
      • we need to not remove WinPython Wheel ==> make it the wppm wheel (just a directory change)
      • that is simpler as we don't need anymore, in theory, to move that part when updating packages from cycle to cycle
      • create the wppm package on pypi , which is the package part of WinPython (change WinPython\ to wppm\ )
      • in make.py, inactivate rebuild of "winpython" wheel (and it would be "wppm") otherwise later local_vs_pypi check will fail
      • wppm help got a bad line 'usage: python.exe c...\wppm' : how that ? force the argparser
    • SIMPLIFY: like if uv, remove doc and news from default python, it becomes a bit passsé:
      • Winpython64-3.13.5.0dot in zip/exe goes from 24/39 Mo to 17/27 Mo (12Mo of zip, 7 Mo of 7zip), 603 files less
    • SIMPLIFY: move '\scripts' , '\t' ,'notebook\doc' directly under 'launchers_final', so we just copy the structure
    • SIMPLIFY: launchers building objects under 'launchers_building', to make things clearer
    • SIMPLIFY: remove DocsDirs list from build process, will be in launchers_final for the ones wanted some
    • BUILD: archive pylock and requ in changelogs
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: requirements.txt no more installed per make.py, so remove that, make.py is down to 300 lines...
    • xlsxwriter-3.2.5 (did yank 3.2.3... because false 3.6 compatibility)
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • replace parameter "base_directory" in build make.py, per "my_WINPYDIRBASE" pointing at buildbase of WinPython
      • remove architecture and pyver parameters to make.py, un-needed
      • make.py down to 290 lines.
    • TEST: ziping with python a dot version is 23 seconds, vs 3 seconds with 7zip. keep basic code in utils for now
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: my_target_release no longer a needed parameter of make.py
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: move 7zip into utils
    • REMOVE LEGACY constraint: make wppm callable via python -m wppm (trick from pip, inspiration from uv not using .exe)
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • replace 2nd call to make.py per direct markdown + zipping from command line
      • remove zip from make.py, make.py is down to 250 lines
    • PUBLISH wppm-17.1.20250705a1-py3-none-any.whl
    • REMOVE LEGACY [for movability] constraints: move launchers scripts to python -m package, when possible
      • python -m wppm
      • python -m idlelib
      • python -m ptpython
      • python -m jupyter lab
      • python -m jupyter notebook
      • ... python -m spyder would require a site-packages\spyder\__main__.py to exist
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • remove unused markdown from make.py, make.py is down to 240 lines
      • clean-up no-more-used modules and create_installer option in make.py
      • remove unused property package_index_markdown
      • remove unused not-rebuild option, make.py is down to 220 lines
    • set SPYDER_CONFDIR in env.bat and winpython.ini, to get spyder config directory portable by default
    • RE-ORGANISATION: readme is to clean-up and modify as a consequence of RE-ORGANISATION, as it goes on pypi/wppm...
    • FIX shamefully broken last cycle wppm --register, _-unregister, -v : fix https://github.com/winpython/winpython/issues/1675 #1676
    • FIX README.RST
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: remove wheels installation logic from make.py, and associated parameters, make.py is down to 200 lines
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD and CLARIFY make.py with openai:
      • _create_initlal_scripts() is in fact _create_env_config(), cleaner env.ini creation code
      • remove uselessly complex python_executable_directory property
      • make.py is down to 180 lines with no more sub-process calling
    • CLOUD: ensure wppm wheel doesn't crash "de base" on non-winpython
      • and we crash because "packaging" wheel is used (and later not even vendored per pip ?)
      • adding packaging in wppm wheel requirement , so it doesn't crash
    • COMPATIBILIY Free-threading: frozenlist-1.7.0, pydantic-2.11.7, pydantic-core-2.33.2
    • publish wppm-17.1.20250713b1-py3-none-any.whl
    • setuptools-80.9.0 with removal of old build system setup.py
    • repair wppm -r . , improve wppm -r .! .... publish wppm-17.1.20250715b1-py3-none-any.whl
    • dask-2025.5.1, aiosqlite-0.21.0, anthropic-0.57.1, datashader-0.18.1, cython-3.1.2, jupyterlab-4.4.3
    • pandas-2.3.0, scikit_learn-1.7.0, scipy-1.16.0
    • streamlit-1.46.1 ... allowing Packaging-0.25.0 compatibility
    • python-3.14.0b4, with free-threading objects next to standard ones, still NEWS.txt to remove by hand
    • ... hum, python-3.14.0b4 is to tag b4..

b1 (2026-07-14: bugfixes, further build logic simplification)

    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • using openai to simplify code of generate_a_winpython_distro.bat..
      • ...it makes it cleaner, but only 10% smaller in .bat, there are 12 steps
      • ....suggestion "deep rework" was to move to python or powershell.
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • make.py: remove noisy constant renaming of variable between functions
      • make.py: remove noisy change of parameters order between functions
      • make.py: simplify a little the build() logic.. make.py is down to 175 lines, would be 130 if we remove un-needed comments
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • simplify further generate_a_winpython_distro.bat with openai, down to 199 lines.
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: re-organize DOS build chain to be able to build a competing python build chain
      • move make.py under "/winpython", so we can use it like a module by a python script
      • move also "portable" directory under "/winpython", otherwise we need to change make.py
      • create necessary-for-to-use-as-a-module init.py and main.py
      • adjust by one line "generate_a_winpython_distro.bat" so it keeps working
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: add competing [more] python build chain
      • add a "build_winpython.py" next to "make.py", where "generate_a_winpython_distro.bat" logic will be moved
      • create the "generate_a_winpython_distropy.bat" that has moved most logic to "build_winpython.py"
      • run two competing build chain in parallel and compare
      • it seems we have a match, but new chain is 75% bigger... some things to simplify
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • debug and simplify the competing python chain with help of AI
      • got to standard lib logging module... otherwise copilote fights for it every time
      • new chain is better looking, only 45% bigger now, still 80% less .BAT
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: move wheelhouse requirements processing into a dedicated function
    • SWITCH to "generate_a_winpython_distropy.bat" toolchain for b2
    • local AI push: onnxruntime, and markitdown (if not whl)
    • github says winpython is 18.2% bat: remove old .BAT chain and goes to 13.3%

b2 (2025-08-02: replace shell code per python code, local AI push)

    • SIMPLIFY BUILD (transfer remaining shell lines to python, without touching stable python code):
      • use a toml file for building (it's standard lib since 3.11)
      • build_winpython_meta.py read the toml file and does what current two layers of shell do
      • remains a oneLiner .bat "python.exe" build_winpython_meta.py %1 on which we drag&drop the desired toml file
      • forced to remove "+" in constraints.txt file... not sure why
      • check result matches previous method:
        • matches on whl
        • matches on free
        • matches on slim
      • ... so we are already down to a oneliner shell line to build (yet still there somewhat)
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: python + toml , instead of bat+python
      • create winpython_builds_bd13.toml, and winpython_builds_bd14.toml
      • check it works, remove classic .bat chains
      • check github bacthfile score is down from 13.1% to (hope) ?? 10% ?? ... 9.5% \o/ !
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: more . bat to .ini+python
      • move pieces of initialization from env.bat to winpythonIni.py... 9.0%
      • move pieces of initialization from env_for_icons.bat to winpythonIni.py... 8.3%
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD: redo WinPython.ini
      • revert "setlocal enabledelayedexpansion" method: it makes the variables not sticking
      • with Perplexity, rewrite WinPythonIni.Py with a Class: way more clear
      • dos line part is done to ... 8.0%
    • SIMPLIFY BUILD:
      • env_for_icons.bat no longer calls env.bat, WinPythonIni.py does the same
      • remove .bat scripts to automatically change WinPython.ini, people using it will do it directly...7.2%
    • CLOUD experience:
      • as there is no progress on jupyterlab/numba/pip, let's experiment now
      • using copilote makes sense, and as quota of copilot is gone, using perplexity ai
      • build structure via a yaml file
        • Download a python-3.13 standalone archive
        • Place it in a dopython that could be used for python orchestration or side actions
        • winpython/launchers_final/* files to dotpython/* : first structure
        • copy dopython/* to target directory: WPy64-31351b3/*
        • upgrade pip to get shortcut launchers: WPy64-31351b3/python/python.exe -m pip install --upgrade pip
        • download requirements as hashed-requirements in dotpython/wheelhouse
        • install into WPy64-31351b3/python/python.exe from wheelhouse as hashed-requirements
        • upload as artifact as WinPython64-3.13.5.1dotcloudb3 (so as .zip) , sha256:404e8f2f4a62cfcb04db6cf472a9eb38abc3111902f5d5ed6b867ef82cd9a345
    • CLOUD experience next:
      • reducing intermediate check list of files.
      • generating markdown with wppm
      • env.ini
      • wheelhouse
      • 7z,
      • 7z auto-extract
      • dotc version
      • whlc version
      • slimc version... showing need to ensure PYTHONUTF8 = 1 at wppm markdown stage
      • PYTHONIOENCODING = 1 at wppm markdown stage
      • wppm --movable at pip update stage
      • requires to not count on packaging for canonicalize_name
    • CLOUD build and publish of wppm
    Image
    • force pip upgrade on local build, as in cloud
    • CLOUD simplify :
      • PYTHONIOENCODING = "utf-8" at wppm markdown stage (rectified)
      • requires to not count on packaging for canonicalize_name (rectified): wppm-17.2.20250823
      • python-3.13.7
      • still generate requirements with hash from local build
      • with gemini, simplify on one github action the builds for 3.13.7: one yml for all 3.13
      • python-3.14.0rc2
    • CLOUD and CLASSIC build simplify:
      • to resolve the no free-threading stripped version of astral: just do it
      • to get pandoc, just get it
    • global check:
      • 3.14.0dotc:
        • pylock.64-3_14_0_1dotb3.toml = pylock.64-3_14_0_1dotcb3.toml
        • 7zip of cloud makes it 3% smaller in the .exe, 0.3% in the zip
        • antivirus score...:
          • Bkav_pro likes the cloud,
          • but overall 3 red per tiny anti-viruses: NANO-Antivirus, SecureAge, Trapmine
          • classic get also 3 red: Bkav Pro, NANO-Antivirus, DeepInstinct
      • missing:
        • WinPython.ini not created... do we want
        • changelog ?
        • github direct publish ?

b3 (2025-08-24: build in python + toml only, or cloud .yaml for dotc and whlc)

    • finish update local build + tweak for a --pre in Whl build
    • update cloud build for numpy-2.3.2 + Numba-0.62.0rc1
    • BUG: cloud markdown of whlc is not working... to put in in wheelhouse\included.wheels , not wheelhouse
    • rework the pylock of whl , requir outputs to point to cloud
    • try build a basic 3.14 slimf for multi-thread : numpy, scipy, matplotlib, pyzmq, cython.. missing tornado, scikit-learn

      • WinPython.ini not created... do we want
      • supress changelog: make it more a wppm thing
    • CLOUD THINKING:
      • using uv instead of pip can be an optional option, to consider, if pip can't use pylock.toml
    • jupyterlab on free-threading requires::
      • binaries on:
        • psutil
        • pyzmq
        • tornado (said fixed if compiled from source)
        • MarkupSafe
        • pyyaml (by use of pyaml-ft)
    • smaller MENU:
      • compact menu to gain 1 line: option --movable y/n
      • compact menu to gain 1 line: option --register y/n
    • MOVABILITY / WHEELABILITY:
      • python -m spyder: ask Spyder for python -m spyder
      • check nowodays jupyterlab default directories... set JUPYTER_CONFIG_DIR=%WINPYDIR%\etc\jupyter when there is no \etc... hummm
      • think to consequences to have wppm on pypi... some will try to "upgrade"

My 2 cents… I don’t know if the debug symbols are worth the size cost for most users. They are primarily for debugging Python and C/C++ code in things like extension modules.

For standard Python debugging (setting breakpoints, stepping through Python code, inspecting Python variables) in tools like VS Code (via debugpy), PDB, or other debuggers, you don’t need the debug symbols.

I think moveable might be a good default.

I just catch that uv "version" number is a close match with "every 3 month", so uv is on a trend to 0.10 or 1.0 next february 2026.

Could you add an option to make user defined launchers as part of the distribution?
A Python script in Scripts which gets an icon and exe path and generate a user defined launcher.
You may constraint the exe to be inside the t folder.

up-to-now, any attempt makes the anti-viruses cry. for your internal use, the project shimmy400 was doing it.
the "nice" solution, or middle way, is still waiting to be found

  7. RoyiAvital commented on Jun 30, 2025

    @RoyiAvital

I am not talking about launchers which will be distributed.
I am talking about launchers to be coded locally. Then the AV system won't have any issue with them.

    WinPython 2025-04 b1 (2025-07-14)

    Changes from WinPython 2025-03 :

    • Infrastructure:
      • WinPython Packet Manager, wppm, is now technically a published 'wppm' package on pypi
      • build code is further simplified and relying on the wppm wheel
      • wppm --fix , wppm --movable are repaired
      • python-3.14.0b4
    • New Packages:
    • Upgraded Packages:
      • 50 packages: from absl_py-2.3.0 to xlsxwriter-3.2.5
      • setuptools-80.9.0, cython-3.1.2, pandas-2.3.0
      • scikit-learn-1.7.0, jupyterlab-4.4.3, streamlit-1.46.1, datashader-0.18.1
    • Removed Packages:
      • imbalanced-learn not compatible with scikit-learn-1.7.0

Areas of particular interest for testers:

    • updated packages
    • stability of the simplified build
    • pylock files provided, with wppm in it
    • remark:
      • wppm is no more crashing at start on non-WinPython,
      • wppm being an upgradable thing or inclusive to non-WinPython is for the moment pure theory, but maybe a fun subject of experiment

    Next build: b2

    • further reduce and simplify build code, improve wheelhouse principle
    • move-on to local AI, drop dead wood to make room
    • explore easier free-threading support, as jupyterlab comes close

    WinPython 2025-04 b2 (2025-08-02)

    Changes from WinPython 2025-04 b1 :

    • Infrastructure:
      • main WinPython build script is 80% transformed into a Python script build_winpython.py:
        • to keep make.py part untouched (old/new build compatible), a subdirectory winpython build is set as a package layout
        • the portable model directory is moved under the winpython directory for same reason
      • python-3.14.0rc1
    • New Packages:
      • onnxruntime-1.22.1
      • markitdown-0.1.2 in "slim" version
    • Upgraded Packages:
      • langchain-0.3.27, dask-2025.7.0, mistralai-1.9.3
      • pyarrow-21.0.0, networkx-3.5.0
      • scikit-learn-1.7.0, skrub-0.6.0, jupyterlab-4.4.4, plotly-6.2.0
    • Removed Packages:

Areas of particular interest for testers:

    • stability after the main build script partially transformed from .bat to python.
    • use of onnxruntime in non-pytorch environnement

    Next build: b3

    • further simplify and transform the build chain into python script + configuration files, away from shell scripts
    • reflect on wheelhouse principles and wppm package principles in ancestors room
    • explore easier free-threading support, with jupyterlab included
    • move-in futher local AI, drop dead wood to make room

    WinPython 2025-04 b3 (2025-08-24)

    Changes from WinPython 2025-04 b2 :

    • Infrastructure:
      • rebuild wppm package and push it to pypi from Githib Actions

      • rebuild WinPython distribution from Github Actions;

        • cloud build: dotc, slimc, whlc, freec
        • cloud build are build from same pylock as usual build, only the way to extract cpython is different:
          • for cloud: https://github.com/astral-sh/python-build-standalone/releases
          • for local: python.org .. pushed in astral form to https://github.com/winpython/winpy.github.io/releases/tag/20250825
          • cloud build for3.14.0rc2 free-threading is using the localy extract python (with overwrite of python.exe per python-314t.exe)
          • wheels are taken from pypi with the predifined hash, slight exception: packaging==25.0, and pip -m upgrade pip
          • wheels versions+hashs are first check on local build, then the pylock (or requirement with hash) is sent to build the exact same set in the cloud-
          • pandoc-3.1.9 is taken from github of pandoc, hash is checked identical to local
      • as 3 new anti-virus IA kids get annoying, the only trust remedy is the cloud build, we continue that route only

      • python-3.13.7

      • python-3.14.0rc1

    • Upgraded Packages:
      • matplotlib-3.10.5, pandas-2.3.1, pillow-11.1.3
      • pip-25.2, polars-1.32.3
    • Removed Packages:

Areas of particular interest for testers:

    • builds via github actions have well progressed: missing only pandoc.exe an free-threading
    • you can fully fork and build yourself on the cloud, now. building times:
      • dotc with .exe and .zip takes 1'
      • whlc with .7z takes takes 3'
      • slimc with .7z and.exe takes about 17'
      • these are slighly faster than a local build... apparently no problem for Github

    Next build: b4

    • we suppose only cloud build remains
    • maybe latest numba
    • explore easier free-threading support in the cloud

Hi, what is the difference between dotc and freec versions?

Hi, what is the difference between dotc and freec versions?

Freec is the version where python.exe is replaced per the free-threading python.exe executable, while in standard optional free-threading option, it would be a separated python-3.13t.exe.

So that everything works as usual, except you are in this brave new world, ready to exploit your 8 to 128 threads to the max

It's was a fix for Apple if I read well, so no problem on Windows.

    Next Cycle will focus on:

    • pylock on pip (simplification), otherwise on the left option
    • python-3.14 with numba
    • Jupyterlab-4.5
    • only for heroic times: Jupyterlab on Python-3.14 free-threading

As it's tricky to get changelogs on wheels from the cloud builds, the front-page won't have it this time.

I don't understand the exe of this release.
    I downloaded WinPython64-3.13.7.0slim.exe.

In the past the exe (Self Extracted 7z) would ask where to install.
Now it just starts to decompress files on the terminal.

    Could you explain?

    @RoyiAvital

I also downloaded WinPython64-3.13.7.0slim.7z to manually decompress the folder.
The folder is named WPy64-31700 instead of WPy64-31370.

It seems the new building phase is generating some bugs.

"WPy64-31700" proves it's not only AI priviledge to hallucinate ... fixed with 54f9e95

the other bug is the use of "-sfx" instead of "-sfx7z.sfx" ... AI code proposed it, and Github Actions worked, so again eyes were filled with tears of joy, instead of taking attention.
==> a typical problem with "easy" code you get with AI.

    fixed with 74c81a7

then revert as "-sfx7z.sfx" is not found... need to look if it's truly possible in Github Actions

    So yes, apparently:

    $SFXModulePath = "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.sfx"
    7z a -t7z -sfx"$SFXModulePath" $destfile7z $sourceDir

anti-virus are looking mitigated about the change
