FRENCH LANGUAGE DAY 2023

On March 20th, the world observes International French Language Day. However, in Nairobi’s United Nations Gigiri compound, an in-person celebration was held on March 21st. This year’s event was supported by various organizations, including UNON’s Language Programme and the Division of Conference Services, UNEP, UN-HABITAT, the French Embassy, Organisation de la Francophonie, the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA), and the Research Institute for Development (IRD).

The event was opened with introductory speeches by HE Hatem Landoulsi, Tunisia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Lionel Fabre, Deputy Head of French Mission in Kenya, Ms. Shivona Tavares-Walsh, Chief Division of Conference Services and UN Resident Coordinator in Congo Brazzaville, Mr. Chris Mburu all of whom shared motivating words in French and English.

Guests were welcomed with coffee and croissants and participated in several activities throughout the event. These included the Language Cafe, which had tandem language exchanges facilitated by Conference Services colleagues, a meet and greet with French teachers, Ms. Chantal Fiaferana and Ms. Virginie Vulliermet, a short film screening organized by the French Embassy, and display booths by research institutes IRD and IFRA, where guests could view their work and ask questions. A photo booth to mark the occasion was frequently visited by the guests to take a souvenir. Don’t forget to have a look and don a look at the photo collage from the celebration.

On 12 February the UNON Language Programme hosted an Open Day and Language Café for its students and other language enthusiasts. From 12.30 the VIP Lounge at the UN Gigiri complex opened its doors for the lunch time event and saw a steady stream of visitors joining  Arabic, Chinese, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese and Spanish language classes in a relaxed atmosphere.

The UNON Language Programme team welcomed visitors with coffee, tea and bitings from the different countries the Teachers are from.

At the French tables, participants enjoyed “pains et fromages” and together with the Portuguese and Spanish tables even a taste of “vino” was served. In high demand were Kenyan “mahamri” and Lebanese coconut truffles! And what about “Pastéis de Bacalhau”?

The UNON Language Programme opened Term 1 2020 during the last week of January with close to 200 students taking classes at various levels in the UN Official Languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian). Additionally, the Programme offers Kiswahili and Portuguese classes.

Please visit our website for the next term dates, times of classes and registration forms. The UNON Language Programme is open for students from all UN entities, Embassies and affiliated NGOs.
