Data Updates
The ATLAS/ICESat-2 fast-tracked latency “Quick Look” data sets for ATL07 and ATL10, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) have been experiencing a data outage since 22 October, 2026. Due to maintenance of a distribution portal for an upstream dataset, processing of these quick looks has been delayed. That maintenance has been completed and we expect ATL07QL and ALT10QL distribution to resume soon. We apologize for any inconvenience.
The SnowModel Outputs Over Northern Alaska Boreal Forest Snowpack, 2009–2023, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains model-derived estimates of spatially and temporally resolved snow water equivalent, snow depth, and snow density across a boreal forest region of Alaska, including the NASA SnowEx 2023 Alaska field campaign study areas. Model output data span 1 September 2009 to 31 May 2023.
ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Global Geolocated Photon Data Low Latency, Version 7 (ATL03LL) is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). ATL03LL contains height above the WGS 84 ellipsoid, latitude, longitude, and time for each photon downlinked by the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) instrument on board ICESat-2.
The SMAP Radiometer Twice-Daily rSIR-Enhanced EASE-Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperatures, Version 3 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has finished reprocessing data and now includes data from 31 March 2015 to 30 April 2026. Data will now be updated monthly. Version 2 of the data will be retired on 16 November 2026.
The SMAP Level-4 data sets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated to a new minor version for data beginning 1 August 2023. This update makes improvements to L1C_TB quality control, IMERG late inputs, and a geolocation issue fix (14 May 2026 to 28 July 2026). These changes are reflected in updated Science Version IDs (Vv8012, Vv8013).
The Near Real-Time VIIRS/JPSS-1 L3 Global Daily 500m SIN Grid Snow Cover, Grain Size, and Dust Radiative Forcing, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set includes parameters from two different algorithms: snow fraction, snow grain size, vegetation fraction, rock fraction, ice fraction, and shade fraction from the SCAG algorithm and snow darkening, radiative forcing, and snow grain size from the DRFS algorithm.
The SMOS-Based SMAP L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 9 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture and SMAP/SMOS L3 Radiometer 9 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 2 datasets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated through 9 October 2026.
IceBridge BedMachine Greenland, Version 7 is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains a bed topography and bathymetry map of Greenland, as well as surface elevation and ice thickness data. This version of the dataset uses Ice Flow Perturbation Analysis to better reconstruct the bedrock topography beneath the ice sheet.
Data from the SMAP Standard products, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been reprocessed from 14 May 2026 to 28 July 2026 to correct for a geolocation issue discovered in August 2026. We recommend that users who previously downloaded data from that time period redownload the corrected files.
ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3A Along Track Coastal and Nearshore Bathymetry, Version 1 will be retired from the NSIDC DAAC on 23 November 2026. Upon retirement, data will no longer be accessible, but all related documentation will remain available on the data set’s web page for future reference. We recommend using the latest version of these data sets, found under the “more recent version” link on the web pages.
ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Gridded Antarctic and Arctic Land Ice Height, Version 6 (ATL14) and ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Gridded Antarctic and Arctic Land Ice Height Change, Version 6 (ATL15) are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). The ATL14 data set contains 100m DEM models of land ice height, while ATL15 has varying spatial resolutions of land ice height change in the same regions.
Delivery of science data products from the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite is expected to cease at 13:00 Universal Time (UTC) on November 2, 2026. After this date, access to the historical data and documentation will still be available, but delivery of new S-NPP VIIRS data sets into the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will cease.
The Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS, Version 4 dataset, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has stopped forward processing. The final temporal coverage for the data is 1 November 1978 to 31 December 2025. The data will remain available for download as a static product at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
ICESat-2 Cal/Val 2022 L2 CHIR Green Wavelength Lidar Arctic Sea Ice Heights and Bathymetry, Version 1 is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains Arctic summer sea ice heights and bathymetry with the primary purpose to evaluate the positional accuracies of NASA’s ICESat-2 ATLAS measurements.
The AMSR2 satellite-based data products, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), will continue forward processing, as the data remain available from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). NSIDC is planning for the development of AMSR3 data products in 2027, but AMSR2 data products will continue to be available until JAXA ends processing.
