Our French placement test evaluation method is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This means that your result will fit into one of the following 7 grades recognized worldwide.

You can communicate in a simple way and perform routine tasks.

Intermediate

You can understand and use sentences on familiar or personally interesting topics encountered in work, school or travel.

You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers.

Advanced

You can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

Proficient

You can understand with ease everything heard or read and can express yourself very fluently and precisely in more complex situations.

What is Preply’s free French test and how does it work?

Preply’s free French placement test is a test you can take to find out your current level of French. Like most free placement tests, it doesn’t provide a certification, but if you’re learning or starting to learn French, taking a placement test is very important to help you understand your level, set your goals and learn French more effectively. The test is easy and usually takes around 20 minutes to complete. You will be tested on your grammar skills.

How does Preply assess my French level?

Preply’s French Placement test uses the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to assess your level. The CEFR has seven different levels, which will determine your result. After taking the test, you will achieve one of the seven from the beginner level of French (A0), to the most advanced level of French (C2). You can use your result to learn about your strengths in French and focus on your areas of improvement.

There are different tests that you can take to find out how you are doing in French.
