Green River Reservoir became a state park in March 1999 when 5,503 acres were purchased from the Morrisville Water and Light Department. Green River Reservoir offers a different experience from most Vermont State Parks. The park is remote and largely undeveloped, providing camping and paddling in a quiet natural setting. All campsites can only be reached by boat. Some are a 1 to 2-mile paddle from the launch area.

The park is managed to remain wild and undeveloped. Recreation is allowed as long as it protects the natural environment and the quiet character of the reservoir.

The Reservoir

The 653-acre Reservoir includes about 19 miles of shoreline, one of the longest stretches of undeveloped shorelines in Vermont. The Reservoir is designated as a “quiet” lake under Vermont Use of Public Waters Rules. Boats powered by electric motors up to 5 mph and human-powered watercraft are allowed. The main access point is located at the southern end of the reservoir off Green River Dam Road.

Protecting the Reservoir

To help protect the natural environment:

  • Use a portable stove instead of campfires whenever possible.
  • Carry out everything you bring in.
  • Follow Leave No Trace principles.

Camping

The remote campsites can only be reached by boat

There are 27 remote campsites at various locations around the Reservoir. Camping is allowed only at designated campsites. All campsites must be reached by boat.

Each campsite has a maximum occupancy based on site conditions. Two designated group campsites can accommodate up to 12 people each. Some campsites may be temporarily closed each season to allow vegetation to recover from past use. Individual sites have a maximum stay of 7 nights. Group sites have a maximum stay of 3 nights.

An ADA-accessible boardwalk connects the parking area to an accessible boat launch.

The park does not rent boats. Visitors are responsible for bringing their own watercraft. Kayaks and canoes may be rented nearby through a variety of outfitters in Morrisville and Stowe.

Day Use

Day use on the reservoir is allowed in limited numbers.

Please follow these guidelines:

  • Do not use campsites for day use activities.
  • Use designated day-use sites.
  • Fires are allowed only in provided fire rings at day-use areas.
  • Respect shoreline areas that are closed to allow vegetation to recover.

Group Use

To maintain a quiet and primitive experience, group use is limited. Only two groups of 8–12 people may use the park at one time for camping or day use. There is a 3 night maximum for group sites, and 9 nights within a season total for the same group.

Group permits are required for day and camping uses during the season. The cost is $25.00 for each portion of a calendar day spent at park. Only two group permits will be granted for each calendar day. A license or special use permit may be needed for group activities during the off-season.

Group sites can be rented through the park or the Reservation Call Center.

Reservations

During the park operating season, reservations for non-group sites can be made in the following ways:

  • Online through the Vermont State Parks reservation system
  • Call the park directly during the season: 802-888-1349
  • Call the Reservation Call Center year round: 888-409-7579 (Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM)

Group campsite reservations must be made by calling the park or the Reservation Call Center.

Parking

Parking is extremely limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the parking areas are full, visitors will not be allowed to enter the park.
